Rooting is making changes to OS. You can customize, get rid of all the crap they load on your phone that you will never use. They have all kinds of forums and videos that show you how. You can even make your phone more efficient ( i.e. keep it from getting so hot, extend battery life.) I just did the basic to get foxfi92 to work. I don't have the time to mess with all the bells and whistles. dumb down meaning they turn off abilities that that phone has from the manufacturer. They alter phones through the software to control certain features of the phone. In my case they rendered foxfi92 app useless without rooting. The app was created so you wouldn't have to pay for hotspot. They do this limit you and offer you more services to get even more $$$ out of you. There is a caveat with rooting, they may not honor your warranty, but it is possible to reset your phone back to original os. They have shops that repair phones who do rooting. I'm sure At&t allows you to turn on hotspot, but for a fee.

I have AT&T. The only place I've had any real problem, the Verizon guys couldn't get a signal, either.

My former 2nd seat had AT&T and wound up tossing his phone because he was constantly getting his calls dropped. I'll stick with what I've seen from him.

Dropped calls are more a sign of a bad phone than a network problem.

Not an apple fan so can't vouch for them, but my Verizon s3 and s5 both, you can talk and use the internet at the same time as long as you are on 4g. Verizon certainly has the best nationwide 4g coverage currently. I use my s3 as a hotspot for my gps, tablet and laptop with no issues.

Should be able to on 3g with the S3 for sure. (had the S3)
The S5 is a better phone so guessing on it also.

Some of the older Phones you had to be on 4g to Talk/Data at the same time.
Had a Motorola Bionic that was like that.
