I'm looking at a 2004 freightliner columbia automatic smart shift tandem axle
    Detroit 60 s 14.0L

The vin number on driver door jam is ripped off

All serial numbers stickers on engine are also missing

plus aren't detroit 14L whistle screams like hell?
This one wasn't screaming like it should. I'm guessing the turbo is shot?

I test drove it and didn't hear a turbo whistle, this is my first time driving an automatic.

Waiting on papers from rebuilt engine and tranny. That's why I consider the automatic plus it's price tag is 12000.

    Does this deal seem shady?

    Please help

Is there any other places where I can find a vin number to match the title?

With no VIN's anywhere to be found, and no serial # on the engine, I don't think I'd be buying it no matter how good of a deal it appeared to be. Without being able to identify the vehicle, you can't verify that the title you are getting belongs to that truck, and that really complicates things in the long run if it IS a different truck. Worst case scenario? It is stolen...which would be my luck. Mack stamps the VIN on the frame rail...up by the steer tire, if I remember correctly, on the right side of the truck. I would imagine other truck manufacturers also would stamp the VIN on a more permanent piece as well. If you can find that and it matches up, it is less shady than if that, too, is removed. If the VIN has been ground off the frame, I'd have my doubts as to the legitimacy of the title and the seller's claim to rightful ownership of the truck...

VIN should be stamped in frame. Engine serial number is stamped in the middle of the block on driver side. It will start with 06xxxxxx.

    Mrnice81 Thanks this.
