Hi everyone. I’ve been a lurker for quite a while here and on other forums but not posted much simply because the info I usually need is already there... it may be this time also but I figured I’d give it a go.
I have a 2004 Freightliner Classic with an MBN C-15. It’s been begging for a rebuild for some time and I’ve finally gotten around to it. The current setup is; all stock hard parts, including turbo, modified 600 7cz file, and a fuel temp wire. I’ve had good luck with this setup for the last couple years. It makes good power, fuel economy is ok, and it keeps the egts and water temp in check.
My plan: I’m going back with stock MBN internals, mainly for simplicity’s sake, and because my local Cat store is incredibly obnoxious about core part numbers. I’m using a gold kit for this. I plan to have the counterbores cut and set to .006” across the board. I also ordered a new spacer plate in case anything looks suspect with the one in there now.. Topping that with a cat reman head. Then I have a 130-9710 cam, 10R-0958 injectors, and Stage 1 turbo. I’d like to do the manifold at this time also but it doesn’t look like the funds are going to hold out that far...
My questions are; Will the stage 1 turbo provide enough air for the marine cam/58’s/600 file? I want good power but I want to match that turbo. If I have to go back to smaller injectors or a different file I will. Also will the stock fuel supply handle the bump in flow with no modification? I plan to shim the transfer pump to get the psi within spec, but will that be all that’s needed? For those of you with experience in this area, what would be the predicted hp output with this combination, provided it will all work together?
I’ll be rebuilding this engine myself, I have some experience but am not a professional. Any help/advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

not an expert on the matter but that cam is good for 100 hp more than stock #58 are another 150 hp, plus the 600 hp file, I'm pretty sure the stage 1 is not going to hold up, your stock fuel system is good enough for all that hp, that I'm sure of.
my advice is, pay attention to details, I just rebuilt my 1LW and I have never done a diesel, but when I was in doubt I made phone calls and check with some of the guys here, already put 30k miles and all is good thus far, I bought my parts from IPD, except the head I got from Cat, if there's a next time the entire kit will be from IPD.Kw Owners Club Thanks this. -

A friend of mine had a 5EK with 600 hp tune and 59 injectors, no cam, to make a long story short he's been thru 4 stage ones.
Now he has exactly what you have MBN, 600 file, marine 1000 plus cam and 59 injectors running a stage 2, which it still small for all that but has held up so far, we are in So Florida where it is flat and our gross weight is 70k max, he is around low 60,000 lbs most times so all that helps, good luck with your set up. -

I know it is simple to put back to MBN for cores, but MBN runs 17:1 compression vs 16:1 of the 6nz/7cz. I think you would be less likely to have head gasket issues with 6NZ cylinder packs and tell your cat guys to make sure you get a new head in re-man box. Seems like one in four is new in reman crate. 0R-0958/ 10R2780 injectors are a crap shoot if you get six decent ones! New number is 211-3024. I would suggest new or a set of flowed 57's aftermarket. They can flow them same as 58's and you will have a much smoother engine. Just my opinions...

With regards to turbo, I know of a guy running modified 7CZ file in 6NZ with stock turbo with approx. 500,000 miles and know issues... All about how you use that power and how heavy your foot is. With the 800 hp cam, it will probably want a little higher rpm for best power. I would say your are in between stage one and two. They are close to same turbo, different turbine A/R, and one wastegated, other not. Might be able to get different turbine housing for stage two to make it a stage one if you feel it is sluggish to light off. Check with your turbo supplier.
