Ok, is there anything that can be done to get decent jake brake perfomance out of the cat motors, that even compares to the ISX?I was reading the jakebrake FAQ the other night, and they state it's not advisable to try and up the manifold pressure... my question is, why is there such a disparity between manifold pressure seen on the ISX's vs the cat engines? For that matter, why are the jake brakes on the cats so weak in comparison to the ISX engines?
I'm dropping 6-7 miles of 7% every day... I'd really like to get it done faster, w/o smoking the brakes or having to crawl down it in 10th (18 speed).

Need your engine serial number to give you more information, have you had the top-end set?
-
They probably need to be set, i found the 3406E and C15/16 brake better than any cummins i ever drove.
I noticed i lost some braking with my big turbine housing and B manifold but not enough to not out brake any N14 or ISX i know of. Have a friend with a ISX that complains of the same thing as you. -
Get the top end adjusted.

Done. Supposedly. Cat dealer in Cheyenne. Was in for new injectors about 2 1/2 months ago, then back in about a week ago when the jake went on the fritz. I let them know the jake performance was lacking, but they didn't have much to offer for an answer.
MFG date on the truck is 08/03. Set at 525. MBN- everyone's fav. With 3.90 gears, btw. I have yet to drive a cat that comes close to any ISX I've driven, as far as jake performance goes. Seriously. The ISX guys are blowing my doors off down the hills. I'm beginning to miss the red motor, but it's not my choice to make. Might not matter much once the snow and ice become a daily PITA, but that won't last forever.
?
I can probably have someone else check the top end, but I'm wondering what other avenues exist... it really is lack-luster. -
I drove a C-15 in a KW while mine was in the shop 3 weeks ago and the jakes on that were weak they made all the right sounds but just weak.
Over here CAT jakes arent even on the same page as ISX jakes thats why I have a brakesaver as well combined with jakes they will blow away a ISX easy down hill. -
then back in about a week ago when the jake went on the fritz\
Has the jake power changed since you owned it??? I need a engine serial number to check to see if you have jake brake or pac brake. If is a pac brake, you may have a cracked housing or worn slave bores. The jake brakes can also move resulting the settings going out. -
I have the same problem with my 3406E ser#5ek39064 lots of sound but not much more. my 60series was 10times better at slowing you down but not much noise

The jake on the 430, series 60 detroit i'm driving is deafining but dosen't slow the truck even bobtail while the jake on the 365, 3176 cat i drove could lock up the drives and was barely audiable in comparison.

I love the Jake in my 1LW Cat. I can come down a 6% grade fully loaded at 55mph and never touch the brakes. It builds upwards of 24-25 psi manifold pressure.
Not even in the same ballpark as the old Series 60 or Cummins.
