IMG_4190.JPG IMG_4200.JPG Hey everybody. My truck has started to lose water into the engine block and I have also noticed oil in my coolant. Engine serial# is KCB03501. It's a 2005 9400i. 1.3 million miles with about 23k mikes on inframe.

Proper pre trip was conducted and all fluid levels were normal. I was about 5 miles into my trip when I started losing water into the block. The truck did not over heat so I think a cracked head or blown head gasket is not the case. Took a look at my precooler and noticed it leaking.

Could someone explain how the coolant is getting into the block because of a bad precooler or is this just a coincidence? It dumped about 2 gallons or so in the few miles I drove it. Thanks for any help

Coolant leaks in to boosted air, thru CAC into intake manifold, into cylinders. If it ain't burnt in combustion, it passes piston rings or valve guides and ends up in crankcase.

Thanks. It just seems like it would have to be ALOT of water in the boosted air for this to happen and wanted to get a second opinion before I buy the precooler. Gonna buy and install tomorrow.

Pre-Coolers/ or as cat calls them "core assy" ain't cheap, but do have high failure rate. Replaced a lot while working @ fleet with C-13's. I have seen them leak at that high rate before. They show up first in oil analysis. Next culprit would be water pump if weep hole is plugged/ boosted air pressurizing cooling system and forcing past wp seal into crankcase. Sidenote, Got to be pretty good with these engines/overhauled eight of them. Best thing we did with them was converted to single turbo. pays for itself in fuel mileage.

To me, it seems you have more than a precooler issue.

Was the inframe done by CAT or a certified shop? If so, you should have warranty on it if it was a platinum kit.
I hope you didn't cut corners back then.

    Good luck

took it into the CAT dealer shop. its head gasket!!! cooler is fine. no warranty because whoever bought the platinum kit did NOT have it installed by a "cat authorized service center" AND only had the 1 year warranty did not pay to upgrade to the 3 or 4 yr plan.. grrrr cheap #####!
