Well, time finally came for my rebuild. C15 set at 600 with 1.1 million on it and dropped a sleeve, she ran like a champ after I knew there was an issue and pulled strong all the way to the shop.

Got a steal of a deal, under 15k with a new head, piston packs, bottom end, etc.

Now comes break in, what do y'all recommend? Advice I was told was "drive it how you're going to drive it, don't idle to much, and try to vary the rpms. Change oil filter at 5k, then full oil service 10k after that"

    What say you?

We used to put them on the dyno after getting it up to operating temp and checking fluid levels. You need to keep cylinder pressures up to help seat the rings so dont "baby" it and don't idle excessively for the first service interval. Also, get your first overhead setting done at the proper interval as the first one is the most important one in the life of that engine.

They messed up on the quote, and had to honor it. It's an actual dealership that did it too, with a 2 year Nationwide warranty! ;)

Running the overhead is a great suggestion, I'll add that to the list of things to do at the required mileage. First load I did wasn't babying it, I loaded to gross then trekked 1000 miles, part of which was clear across 80 in Pennsylvania, 70 mph and didn't need to downshift once ;)

Did that with the first load! I'm seriously impressed with the power of this motor now, I haven't had to downshift once on a hill loaded to 80k.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Simple. Drive it, work it, don't baby it, vary your speed, don't abuse it but do work it. No idling for some time. Also as said have the overhead run when it is due.

Yep, full load, work it! Don't baby it! The only way for a proper break-in is to fully seat the piston rings and valves. The only way to do this is with full cylinder pressures which you can only do under full load. Change oil at half interval. If you want to do the 5k, and 10k, that is good too.
