Pulled the engine cause it spun a rod bearing and wiped out the crank. Today I started to clean the head up and noticed all 6 were cracked between the intake valves. I'm hearing that its ok and I'm hearing it needs a new head. To me a cracked head is a bad head. Anyone have any experience with this?

those cracks are normal in that area. but how deep they are is the question. I sent my head to cat for them to check it and resurfacing. cost about $500 to inspect. came back ok.

I'm not sure as I am not familiar with the C-15 head but have often seen it on heads.
Some makes and models are more prone to it and if the cracks aren't to deep they seem to look worse then they are.
I however could never get used to putting a head back when I knew it was cracked.
I saw some manufactures (Mercedes) on some models machine a half moon type recess between the valves on later models of problem model types.
I believe one of the leading causes is over torqued hold down nuts on injectors on some types of heads.

if your going to reuse the head, I would still have it resurfaced instead of just cleaning it up.

I'm gonna pull the valves out tomorrow and see if I can see how far up the cracks go, on #2 is the biggest crack so that will be the first I'm gonna check. I know it's common for these heads to crack between valves but I just can't be comfortable with saying its ok for those cracks to be there.

My only fear is that the valve seat would come loose. But I have sent probably 75 cat heads back on with those cracks that cat says are ok and never had problems yet.

Truck got towed into shop cause it spun a rod bearing and seized the crank. Oil was already drained so not sure if there was any water in there or if it was burning oil. I guess the best thing to do is to send it out to get checked. Even if it comes back ok, how long till those small cracks spread??

Ive got trucks that have put 500000 on the heads after I reinstalled. They were cracked and cat said they were fine and so far so good.

Justin home many miles were on your engine? My 2ws spun a rod bearing also with a million miles on it. It seems like I'm hearing this more often in the last few years. My head was cracked in #6 and CAT said they would accept it as a core but there was a upcharge for the exchange head. I think it was going to be 2500 exchange.
