Hey everyone. I have an '01 6NZ that started popping with the Jakes on high today. Never did it before. Only seems to do it under heavy load at or above 1700 rpm. Any ideas?
C15 Jake Popping under heavy loads or 1700 rpm?

does it pop on low or medium?
can you hear the popping through the exhaust or more so from the top of the engine?
I would be doing a valve set and jake adjustment ASAP and have a visual inspection while you're in thereOxbow Thanks this. -
If it just started it today, you need to get the valve covers off ASAP and see if you have a jam nut that came loose. Then do an overhead.

I haven't tried it again since it did it last Thursday. Don't want to do any further damage. Overhead was just done 8000 miles ago. (Mechanic didn't torque the locknuts)
Almost sounded like a backfire/popping sound. I have Jacob model 340B's on it, with the little cups on the bottom of the pushrods; maybe one came apart.
I'll be opening it up tomorrow to check all the settings. Bought a Cat barring tool and Injector height tool today. Having a heck of a time locating a .033" feeler gauge though. Anyone know of a source? -

I had a Kenworth dealer almost smoke my NXS by missing broken rocker studs and misadjusting the jakes. I do all that myself now.

if it sounded like backfire/popping then that may be a fueling issue. if for some reason the fuel wasn't getting shut off during jake application it will do that. same as when you manually apply them on the solenoid, the ECM doesn't know theyre applied so doesn't cut fuel.
low is 3/4
medium is 1/2/5/6
high is all
that can be a quick was to isolate a cylinder or jake housing.
id strongly recommend getting tune up done. I personally don't torque the lock nuts either. I just do them firm by hand and touch wood ive never had one come loose. when the tune up is done with 340A/B/C/D jakes its important theyre all backed right off at the start and then adusted up to spec, purged, then locked upOxbow Thanks this. -
Thanks everyone, for taking the time to reply. I've been given some great advice. I'll report my findings tomorrow
lilillill Thanks this. -
Ok, so I checked the overhead today and found a few out-of-adjustment intakes, exhausts and Jakes. In fact, all the Jakes were loose by approximately .003 to .004 thou.
I corrected everything and ran the engine. Tested all the Jakes via the solenoid buttons and they worked fine. I didn't find any oil leaks anywhere.
I didn't get a chance to road test it yet, but possibly tomorrow or Monday. Guess we'll know then.
Guess if it's still popping, I'll be rebuilding the Jake heads next weekend
