I know 30, and 15 thousandths for exhaust and intake, are jakes 33 or 37? And i saw in a previous thread an op said he seated the valves with a dead blow? Is that really necessary if you rotate the engine to tdc in the direction it naturally rotates?
From memory >IVA is .020 and CAT brakes were .027. Always back off IVA and jakes and set valves first. Always tight getting anything in there to torque, I always freehand the torque and mark when done. I made a crooked face on the deadblow comment too.....never heard of it.
I think its the “snap back” that seats it not the hit. I worked for cat for a while in the early 2000’s and I dont remember doing that.
That'd really be no different than the valve simply closing as the cam rotates. Sure you're not going to get that little "snap" but really, if a valve spring with what, 50+ lbs of force can't hold the valve closed and seated, a valve set would be the least of your worries on that engine.
Double check which brake you have. MBN1 and up Jacob 340D says .030 in. +/-.003. Brake Nut torque is 25ftlbs +/- 4 I was probably thinking bxs, mxs, most have CAT brakes and are .027
From SIS I never tap with mallet either to seat everything. I do run adjusting screw tight a couple times to seat everything before inserting feeler gauge and making adjustment.
