Hello, I am an owner of a small 6 truck peterbilt fleet. Currently, all my trucks are 2014 or newer 389’s. However, I recently ran across someone that had a 2011 Peterbilt 389 glider with a c16 motor. The motor has all new parts on it and has only been in the truck 4 months. The transmission is an 18 speed and itneeds replacing. I have an spicer 6x4 sitting in my garage; wanted to know is this too much torque for that tranny? The truck is almost show quality and would only be driven by me twice a week for maybe 1600 miles. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

It's a C-15 in video. All depends on your right foot. Many a 9513 or 12513 lived behind some hot motors.snowman_w900, Oldironfan, bigguns and 5 others Thank this. -
I agree it's all in your right foot. I have seen a set of boxes behind several 3408 CATS and KTA Cummins that were big horses.

If your a good driver and easy on equipment, then no problem. Some abuse in the lower gears and weak link will show up.
As far as torque ratings go, a C15 set @ 475HP and 1650 torque is more torque than its rated for.
A stock C16 is 600HP 2050 ft lb torque, the spicer PSO140-6A is rated for 1400 ft lbs torque. the old spicer 1241 4 speed aux is rated for 12,000 ft lbs. In 1st gear 7.47 x 2,050 = 15,313 ft lbs going into the aux trans.
This says on paper it does not work, in the real world, with "top shelf" drivers it works just fine.
We need to know what transmissions are laying in the garage, there is a AMO 1750-4 rated at 17,000 lbssnowman_w900, DougA, bigguns and 3 others Thank this. -
Can the moderators merge this thread with the other? Thanks

Thanks a lot guys for the input. However, I have a spicer pso140-6a main box and auxiliary is a spicer 1241 4 speeds. Any thoughts?
snowman_w900 Thanks this. -
Like I said, on paper it does not work. That 6 speed is rated @ 1400 ft lbs, a 600HP C16 is putting out 2050 ft lbs. The 1241 spicer is rated at 12,000 ft pounds, in 1st gear you would be putting 15,313 ft lbs into it.
On paper both boxes are to weak to handle a C16.
In the real world, with a good driver both boxes would last a very long time. Myself and some others on this forum would love to have that setup and would not be scared to work it.
You seem to be unsure of yourself, that is a huge amount of torque, things can go bad and get expensive fast. Since you don't have a burning desire for the 6x4 two stick, then just replace the 18 speed. It's made to handle the big horse. Enjoy the show quality pete with the C16 big horse.snowman_w900 Thanks this.
