Does anyone know if a Jake brake can be added to a c18 (not an exhaust brake) or would a c15/c16 converted to c18 bore and stroke and cam spec still have a functional Jake brake? I am more interested in the mechanical obstacles and not the ecm that will obviously need to be flashed to be a true c18 cat. Can it be done or should I just abandon the dream of a c18 cat with a Jake brake altogether? Am I asking this on the wrong thread?

c18 can have c15/16 jakes fitted. best to run 70 pin with 6nz or 7cz file on the 18 with the correct turbo and injectors for power level

Just curious if you ever ended up putting the c18 in your glider or not? I’m tossing the idea of putting a c18 in my old international cabover and just looking for any advice.

I did not. I ended up buying a dozer and loader for a big grading job I was on and never bought the glider. Kicking myself now. If I were to do it today I would be building a 16l cat. Not an 18.

Funny how that usually works lol what was your reasoning behind not going with the 18 if I can ask?

Honestly I can't remember all the details...I think the 18 is more of a wow factor and less practical. I spoke to a guy that had an 18 and he had issues. He suggested going another route.

Most that build them don't realize that caterpillar changed the piston design during C15/18 Acert production, the early mahle monotherm style piston is known to be less reliable than the later friction welded full skirt versions.

I have two friends that are running 18L engines that haul steel, both are over 1000hp to the tires and they have no more issues with them than they would have running 15Ls at the same power.

If anything build an acert based engine, they have the best bottom end that cat has made in the entire 3406 life time

    pushbroom and black_dog106 Thank this.

    Is the fuel mileage reasonable?

It would be the same as any other displacement at the same HP.

I get what you're saying but that doesn't always play out in reality. A 3406a 400 horsepower gets far worse mileage than a 3406b 400hp
