John do you go west much in the wintertime? Being up here in PA now I see these places you go to and I'm like "hey I was there yesterday", we have a customer in Greencastle, we transfer product up from Martinsburg, WV and I go right past Breezewood, I'm bound to see you one of these days. I'm right off of 70, but do a lot of traveling up near 80 as well, looking forward to getting this winter underway in kind of a weird way, I've been anticipating it for months now but I'm just to the point of being ready to learn and conquer this fear.

I have gone west more in the winter than I have in the good months since I started working here at Calex.. I have done winter driving for 30 winters now. The thing that scares me the most is not the weather or road conditions, those I can handle, but rather the over abundance of new drivers on the roads. Winters across Pa on 80 sometimes rivals winters across Wyoming. When I load my Florida loads in McElhattan I usually run down 99 to the pike then over to Breezewood. I like going that way. The road isn't that busy, unless there's a football game on Saturday at State College. It seems as though I'm going through Greencastle on 81 every week.

I haven't gotten over to Greencastle yet, just know we have a customer over there that makes shingles, they've actually been keeping me close to home and getting me home every day which is nice. Driving here in western PA with the hills and all takes a lot of getting used to so it's nice they're not just throwing me in to the fire, I've already been here 2 months this coming Friday, they say time flies when you're having fun, so I guess I'm having fun?:biggrin_25521:

I've always found it funny when I've heard drivers talk about the mountains out west. They never had the opportunity to drive the back roads of Pa, especially in the winter. I've been on more 9, 10, and 11% grades on some of the most narrow, crooked roads that flatten out in the middle of these little towns. All without those truck escape ramps. Run those for a winter, you'll really get to appreciate the "Mountains" out west.

Exactly, I went to a well site just north of Steubenville, OH last week, the roads were decent going back there but once you got off the main route the hills were like nothing I had seen before, literally 2nd gear at 7mph and when you crested the top you couldn't see the other side, felt like I was on a rollercoaster. Anyhow, have a safe trip out in the morning, and back north on Wednesday.

Back home. I left the house last night, got to Orlando at midnight, bumped the dock and went to bed. Was empty at 10am and headed back home. Jason sent my next 2 loads over the computer for the rest of the week. I load tomorrow at 2pm at the port in Jacksonville, unload at midnight in Spartanburgh SC, then run down to our customer in Piedmont for a drop and hook that I'll drop in Mountain Top Pa around 6pm Thursday.

I have to totally agree with you on the tight little mountainous roads through PA. I used to deliver a lot up to Olean, NY, Millerton, Pa, and sometimes pickup in Cuba, NY and would always have to go south afterwards. I used to run Hwy's 15 and 220 a lot. Used to also take 219 down to 153 to get to I-99 and remember some bad downgrades on 153 that had to be way steeper than the ones on the interstates.

I always enjoyed running the backroads on PA because of all the beautiful scenery and small towns.

I love the country side up there. Very beautiful scenery that leaves you breathless.

Have a safe trip John. If you encounter any good scenery or things we can learn from, please post pictures.
