My company is considering dropping our Calexico to Edmonton route because of this nonsense. Small company all o/o we have a contract route to San Diego and then from Calexico to Edmonton - it's a great route to drive. But of course California decided to f it all up with their stupidity.

A lot of people seem upset about having to pay the $30. My question, that so far I have not been able to get answered, is how much is the inspection going to cost ? One time this year, twice a year for the next two I think, then it goes to four times a year. Cost of inspection and however long a wait required to get it done will probably cost at least a day's revenue.

Supposedly there are 14? Other states that are behind California and will soon be implementing the same BS.
For me, I’m just waiting for an opportunity to sell my truck and trailer and be done with it all.
I only planned on 2 years OTR yet 8 years later here I am still. -
California has approved 2 different test hardware companies. Also you have to be certified with Carb to do the testing. The hardware is subscription based after you buy the hardware. I don't remember the cost. I think it was too expense for me as an O/O to justify the purchase and get certified.
Testing is required to start June 2024. As mentioned above 2024 test is twice a year with it increasing to 4 times a year. I was told by one shop located in southern CA. the cost would be $300 per test this year.
Basically, all they do is verify the truck vin, hook up to the data port on your truck. Submit the ATS data to carb in real time. Also verify the ATS has not been tampered.roshea Thanks this. -
I looked up the cost and yes, it was definitely prohibitive for an O/O to purchase. Two inspections a year, eventually four, that's a good chunk of money for something that takes just minutes to do. As I read it 2013 and newer is OBD test, just takes minutes, but older trucks will be visual inspection and I think will stay at twice yearly.
The software I first found runs on an iPad and requires a hardware interface. Since then at least one more company has entered the market and is one time 500 license fee for software, then 504 annual for cloud service that will handle the uploads and reporting to CARB ... that plus whatever interface is required for your truck. So ... compared to 600/year then 1200 that would work out a bit cheaper. Taking the course to get certified is free online. You could test other peoples trucks for a fee perhaps and make it back quickly.Accidental Trucker and xsetra Thank this. -
And there are people that will jump through all these hurdles and bs for that pathetic state? All of those that complied by buying the necessary year equipment to please CARB now have to deal with this too? Wow, I mean just wow.

When I read this stuff, I wonder how long we’re back at having the equivalent of bingo cards to run legal interstate…..
This nonsense goes against everything we’ve accomplished to make interstate trucking efficient. What’s next? File a different mileage and fuel report for each state?roshea Thanks this.
