The ports have always been notoriously slow and complex and certainly not any kind of model for efficiency.

That's not something you can just instantly change.

Exactly. The ports are strangling the country and their unions are the enemy of the people. Apathy, greed and inefficiency are their hallmarks.

yes it can change, if we had a leader in the White House, just like what Truman and Eisenhower did in the 50’s and what fdr threatened to do during the war, the president can claim a national security issue and put the ports under federal control and get things moving.

This can be done with one executive order, get the military into the port and move containers out of the ports.

The military has the means and the experience for moving large quantities of equipment and keep it organized, we need to use them, not the national gaurd.

We have plenty of space in the areas where these ports are, hell la has Edwards which can be used as a staging area for trucks and containers, there are other federal properties that can be also used. Get a few of those container lifts there, get trucks organized to do the moving to get these containers out of the ports and then have flat beds moving the containers to the receivers.

    this isn’t a political statement.

Ronald Reagan fired air traffic controllers for not working. The system many say has greatly improved since then.

Aren’t port workers federal employees? Just wondering if it’s a possible solution.

    In other words,
Find someone who knows how to get the job done and put him in charge.
    Ok.
    Next question.

Who is going to pay for all of this?

What would your response be to the government requisitioning your trucks/drivers and paying you $500 a day?

In the last 10 years most of the slack in the supply chain has been removed. The more efficient a system gets, the more brittle it becomes. Record high volumes coupled with poor labor planning/management are the problem. Bringing in the military won't solve anything.

Unless you are a teamster. In the communist state, they've fought against the hours. They've fought against automation. Both of which would resolve the issue. Over a billion dollars spent to upgrade and automate the ports. No backlog.

Simple things that could have been done. While port traffic was low.

Are the ships being paid detention time?? I suspect they are in some form or they would use other ports

That's pretty much been proven at Norfolk too. Much of it is automated and it's generally efficient. No worries about having to deal with the Union's strikes or slowdowns when they're extorting the state for something they want.

I'm not asking about automating or upgrading the port or rail facilities. I'm asking about who us going to pay for using the military to staff private industries?

I'm also saying that using the military won't necessarily work.
