I was wondering what kinda weight allowance, if any, will the scales in california allow you. I had a freind loading out of ohio goin to long beach and was asking me. I said i dont run out there much and couldnt tell ya. hes pulling a 53 step and closed the axles and said hes 34700 on the trailer. someone told him cali would allow 900? I told him i wouldnt wanna be the one to find out. I just figuerd one of the gurus on here would have some helpful i info. Thanks Guys.

California is the last place I'd want to be hauling a load with overweight axles....I try to skip their coops anytime I can.
cuzzin it, aiwiron, Mommas_money_maker and 5 others Thank this. -
He may not get fined but if he lands on the scale he definitely will get inspected . 90% chance unless their full and backed up if there even open . He needs to make sure his equipment and paperwork are in order asap. be nice and they will in return .
When they reach for the disposable rubber gloves , Your getting looked at lol equipment wise ..
They dont mess around most thourough inspection I ever had was in cali..
They are prepared will you be?CAXPT Thanks this. -
Somebody on here once said they might allow 200 lb over, but they will get you if your trl tandems are to far back.
-
tandems can only be 40ft back from the kingpin and you might be able to get away with 100lbs over. i ws 300 over and refused to run just cause they are sticklers

I run a 53 step with slider spread and will say that if you are under gross (80,000) and you arent more than 500 over on that axle you MIGHT get a chance in Cali to slide by. I would either drive around the scales as mentioned earlier or by them. Where is he going to as this will determine my advice. If hes coming down 40 then just cmon in to Cali and take a side step tour on 15 by heading west at Barstow and south at Mojave. I highly recommend this route. Do not, I repeat DO NOT come on I-10 and go thru the Banning scales.
-
if it is like my step the axles are only in 2 places that is 10'2" spread or closed tandem, and no they don't allow you to be over, and you will get inspected if your over and pay the fine on the spot, then they may let you run or you may have to have it adjusted that is going to depend on the officer and of course your attitude
CAXPT Thanks this. -
I will post this for the guys who dont know what a 53 ft slider spread is. You have two choices with this, either run as a spread axle (cannot do this in Cali or western Canada) or slide the rear axle forward and run as tandems which is what you have to do in Cali. The front axle is fixed so there arent holes in which to adjust your trailer weight as in a regular 53 ft trailer would have.
NWMAXI Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info men. yeah hes goin in on 40, down 15. Yes i have been through the banning scales, lol.....i didnt buy one of the shirts they were selling that said, I MADE IT THROUGH THE BANNING SCALES,........i told him i didnt think cali would allow anything. do those scales close in the evening usually though. the ones on 15 goin to ontario?
Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
Yes , I heard that its late late though like go through at 3:30 in the morning type of thing. I wouldnt take the chance there. Use my creative routing. He wont be off route by much at all if any as hes heading to Long Beach. Head west at Barstow, Ca on the 58 to Mojave, CA and then head south on the 14 which will take him to I-5 and he will be good to gosnowman_w900, NWMAXI, cuzzin it and 2 others Thank this.
