Unfortunately your experience is not uncommon with a lot of megas. Try to keep it as respectful as possible as he is doing your daily evals and reporting to the company. Try to speak with an Operations manager/Training manager and advise them you're not a good fit with your trainer. They should provide you a new one. Be sure to keep it professional, a decent company will get you a new trainer. But that may not solve your problems as they may not have many good trainers..just a possible reality.. I'd try my best to work it out with that trainer and then ask for another.

If he's been driving 40 years he's likely just looking to exit unfortunately. That's a long time to be on the road..probably had more than a few set backs. All The Best

He is using you as a logbook. Just like Lonwolv54 says, talk with a training supervisor or someone who can change you to another trainer to make sure you can get some seat time to do some backing as you will need that out on the road. When we went through driver training the same thing happened to my wife who was with a trainer that used her as a logbook. When we got back together I had to show her how to back up. When I was done with her it made our lives much easier as a team to be out on the road.

I prefer dry vans, I run Georgia Pacific Dedicated, typically I run Fontana, CA to Corrinne, UT I run from Rancho Cucamonga to Flying J SLC (640 mile +/) -), take 10 to to corrine drop n hook (70 miles) , Off to Procter and Gamble Corrinne UT ( 5 miles, another drop n hook, Since I have got up at Flying J SLC I have normally used up about 2.3 hours of my 14 about 1.5 of my 11. Head for the TA Speedway Las Vegas, (500 miles) take my 10 off, Take off for Walmart DC Fontana, ca (230 miles) drop n hook, call GP rancho seee if load is read if so go pick it up for another round. I do 2 of these with resets at home in Mojave per week, do not think refer is going to be any faster, average rop nhook less than 30 minutes per yard. Sam speed as loading a powder train in a empty plant, a little faster than unload powdert trian.
Anyway I like it, i have a good dispatcherr that knows How I want to run and they have no problem with it. I dont have to schdule home time its a given, just keep the door closed. There are always divations, but thats trucking, just handle them and get back to what you like to do.
One of my alternates is Cargill Salt out of Toole Ut, that goes to Home Depot and the DC varries, But I still like it, park out front, idle in slow staying off duty till loaded, (for me not a co request, in fact they probably would not like it) Show my pretrip scale out and head down the road, These goto Home Depot in Glendale AZ alot, then I go to G&P in Glendale and drop n hook for fontana and back on schdule. Sorry for the ramblings/

Maximizing driving hours is important, personally ( I have trained for many companies) I see no real issue with using available hours, When I trained my son , I did the same thing there, because part of the lesson is max miles for the truck. I do agree with treaching backing as well, new driver always backs in.
