Why not get in school. And talk to the recruiters in person, when they show up.
They're much more receptive of someone who has the process going. No recruiter is going to call you back, because you might start school....soon.
I'm going to seem harsh. But the reality of this is. You don't have a CDL, any formal training....anything. But you want someone to return your calls and offer you prospective employment. Otaaaaay.

At Prime, you don't have to go to school first. They train you from day one. That's how I got started, and it worked well for me. Call them. Despite all the whiners, etc. they ARE a good company.

All the companies I applied to are training companies. I realize they aren't going to go out of their way to get me to come to their school but I just wanted to know what the best way was to talk to them The warehouse job I have now makes it very difficult to be on the phone any amount of time during the day but I didn't want them to think I was too lazy to follow up on my app.

You're in a pay me now or pay me later situation really.
If you use your return for school. You'll owe the companies nothing, and you'll make more as a result.
You'll also get a better response from recruiters.
You have to remember, you will not be earning anything while in school. Be it a company, State or privately owned school.
The typical school can last 3-12 weeks. Then you still have to train, at a reduced salary. I know that sounds like an oxymoron...school then train. But that's how it is.
Typical set up. For Covenant.
You go to school, then you go out with a trainer for X amount of time. Then you're placed with another co-driver for X amount of time. Then you get your own truck.
Not all companies do it this way. But you're still working at a reduced salary for several months, if you include school to solo time. -
I thought it might be an advantage that I wasn't completely green. I drove team with my ex for 6 mths back in 2001. I loved every minute of driving even though it destroyed my marriage. I put my prior experience down on all my apps but I may have hurt my chances instead of helped. I was signed up to go to Driver Solutions and drive for PAM but since they are laying off I have to look elsewhere. I applied with Watkins Shepard, Conway (I drove for CFI the first time) Prime and Millis. I'm not too picky at this point. That dang warehouse is killing me. If anyone has any recent info on Watkins Shepard I would love to hear it. Their website didn't tell much. Thanks!!!!

I left them in December. But I still think they are a good company. Although their starting pay is lower than most, for the new guys and gals. -
TM - Prime is not a school. You get your CDL permit, then you are ON THE ROAD with a CDL trainer, not cooped up in a classroom and driving on a parking lot. Since you are on the road, you get paid while in training. Once you test out and get your CDL, you team with a different trainer (or sometimes the same one) until you are ready to go out on your own. It is a good way to go. I made money from the beginning and didn't have to shell out 3g for a school. (I figured if I had 3g to spend on school, I probably didn't need another job!)

As for your "Experience". You have none. 6 months 8 yrs ago is no experience. -
Does Watkins Shepard do their training in Missoula? I live half way between their Mississippi and Georgia terminals in North Alabama so I thought that might be an advantage. I've narrowed my choices down to them, Prime and Conway. Gonna give them all all a call tommorrow but won't have a lot of time for questions. Montana is a long way from Alabama so I guess I'll fly up if they accept me. Thanks for all the help guys!!
