Or reduce the truth in it.
Your one those ' legend in your own mind individuals'
" I was up 28+ hrs And still overnighed one"
And when something ( heaven forbid )
happens they're going to throw you under the bus.
Matter of fact your rebuttal to my statement only illuminated and cemented the truth of of what I said even further.
Thank You. -
The ATA Big Box companies write their own ELD software and can do with it what they want...
25(2)+2, BoostedTeg and poppapump1332 Thank this. -
Here's a real world example for you
I am on a load that picks up 1 hour from my house and delivers to a destination 7 hours from the pickup. My pickup time is 9 am. I begin my day at 715 arrive at 830 check in, load is almost ready, no big deal I get at least a 2 hour nap in and they load me at 1130 and I leave at 1215. This is unusual for this shipper, normally I am loaded and moving within 1 hour of arrival. I do my customs paperwork from the shippers yard (1.25 hours to border) and drive to nearest truck stop to border. I wait for clearance, usually takes maybe 20 minutes tops. Today, us customs computers are having trouble processing FedEx shipments, and I am told it is an unknown time it will be fixed. I slept well last night (930 pm to 6 am) in anticipation of getting to receiver (they have overnight parking) early this evening. My delivery appointment is 6 am tomorrow. If customs opens up in the next 15 minutes, I can get there before the 14 hour window slams on my fingers. If not, I will have to take an 8 hour break and leave as soon as I can (arrived to this truck stop at about 1315). I have been sitting here making calls and waiting for the royal invitation, since 1315, so I am eligible to drive again at 2115 and I can still legally make my delivery appointment.
My options are:
1.Run over 14 hour rule a bit, depending when I can enter USA. Technically illegal, likely safest option. Sustainable to my business? Yes (if I color outside the lines a bit without getting caught)
2.Go to sleep now (try to- I am wide awake) and resume at 930 pm or so. More legal? Yes. Safer? No. Sustainable to my business? As long as I don't crash, I guess this would be = yes. *Remember, yesterday I went to sleep at about 930 pm, so much for my 24 hour circadian rhythm
3.Call the people I got the load from and tell them to reschedule because ....? Of things beyond my control? Because I cannot get any decent rest between now 315pm and 930pm? I'm sure they will be eager to load me again if I choose this option. Legal? 100%. "Safest"? Yes. Sustainable? Fat chance.
I'd like to hear what the elog crowd would do in this situation.poppapump1332 Thanks this. -
You have to educate your customers on the rules and regulations of your business.
You can't allow your customers run your truck.
If the customer can't get it through their head that I'm not putting my life and business on the line so they can survive.
Then it's time to drop' em. There's plenty of good understanding customers out there.
This is a really hard concept for a lot of people. Again this falls back to standing up for yourself.
And the need to educate your customers will be even more come December if the mandate actually goes through. -
The thing that is holding me up is us customs. I cannot go through until they accept the shipment. There is nothing I can do.
Legally I can claim I went to sleep when I arrived here 130 pm and start at 930 pm completing a split break. I can still deliver on time - 6 hours or so of driving and 6 am appt at receiver.
Tell me what I need to educate the customers on, seeing as I continue to miss your point. Also I'd like to know how you would proceed with this load and what you would tell them if it was your customer. -
ELDs are just yet another money making, bury the small independent O/O scam.

If this stitsuation put me in the position of having to run outside of my limitations ( safe hours ) or my coloring book then it's time to call the customer and let them know when the earliest I can be there ( legal and safe ) without putting their freight at risk of winding up in a ditch or shut down at the coup for an exstended period because I caught coloring outside the lines.
If you've educated your customers this shouldn't be a problem.
By the way the minute a situation like starts to develop get on the phone and advise your customer there may be an issue, don't wait till last minute to give them the bad news.
What do you need to educate your customers on?

What do you need to educate your customer on?
The constraints that we're laden with due to the rules and regulations that we're governed by in this industry. And in your case the added headaches that can arise with crossing the border.
And on top of that it's the whole I'm not a robot thing ( I'm a human and I need sleep).
You do this by sitting down with them and having a honest, polite and professional conversation with them. I guarantee you'll be shocked at how many shippers and receivers have absolutely no clue about the transportation side that their business relies on.
Most are genuinely thankful for explaining it to them, at least in my experience it's been that way.
Some give you that confused look and it's kind hard sometimes to tell if it's genuine or they're just playing dumb.
Again there's plenty of good customers out there that will understand and not hold these bumps in the road against you.
All because you took the time to educate them in a upfront and honest manner.Last edited: Aug 3, 2017
