I work for a mega, and one of my pet peaves is how long it takes to get someone on the phone.
About 50% of the time I have to call in, I end up sitting on hold for a half hour or more.
some examples
My truck got hit by a car at a rest stop this morning while I was asleep, took 45 minutes sitting on hold to talk to accident reporting.
Last month when the reefer broke down, I called into breakdown. Sat on hold for half an hour only to be hung up on. Called in a second time and had to sit on hold for another half hour to get approval to go to thermo-king. Took less time by the thermo-king to fix the unit than the time I sat on hold.
2 months ago, it took 2 hours to get a lumper check approved due to the phones being tied up. Amusingly my carrier charged the receiver detention, and I got paid the detention even though it was entirely my carriers fault.
Now I'm sitting at the shipper after getting loaded trying to get approval to take a different route due to a road closure, cannot get ahold of anyone. Watching my clock click down.
I'm really #### tired of this. Is this the way that it typically is at most companies or just the megas?
Calling in to the company.

Typical... But you can always complain and get a few cell #'s to call when it's a pressing issue.
But basic things? Send a message asking them to call you, take a nap waiting on the return call. -
Typical mega BS. I guarantee you a small company has somebody staffing the phone 24/7 and does not care what route you take as long as it carries you to toward the receiver.

bzinger Thanks this.

Ahhhh sure makes me glad to be driving for s small company. In the rare event I do have to call into dispatch it generally rings no more than 3 times and "hey xxxx how's it going". Plus changing my route is super easy when the only person to consult is myself lol
bzinger, Kyle G., Suspect Zero and 2 others Thank this. -

Some times, someone will ask whether or not being an owner operator is "worth it."
They're trying to factor in money. Money isn't the primary thing. Being the owner op takes 99% of the STUPID out of the job. I make the decisions. I make the calls. If I don't like it, we aren't going there. Hometime request? Kiss my arse. Elephant races? Heck no. Designated fuel stops? Yeah, I am the designator. Appointments? I set them with the shipper and receiver. Not in 3 months. The travel agent calls me. Playing phone tag at repair shops? Ancient history.
Same job, worlds less STUPID in my day.homeskillet, Broke Down 69, LoneCowboy and 7 others Thank this.
