I could have just taken the other route without too much blowback, but I would have certainly lost my quarterly fuel bonus.
Out of route miles as well as fueling outside of approved stops would have nuked it. -

tinytim Thanks this.

But for a driver to have to hang on the phone to ask someone else to read a map because the driver for whatever reason can't be trusted to do that himself is nothing short of ridiculous.48Packard, bzinger, Boattlebot and 3 others Thank this. -
Are you captian of your truck or are you not? Use a alternative route. If your bosses scream and yell because you did not use the authroized closed route then you might want to find another company to run for. I have rarely if ever run into a problem with company people over a route except in once or twice when someone does not understand or accept that the hazmat has to go another way that takes time and mileage to do it. (Baltimore Md, uses Key Bridge which is south of the city rather than the tunnels which you don't go with hazmat. It's about a 40 minute difference.
Im not your enemy, I encourage you to consider the situation as a agent of your company. And then get it moving. Whatever the problem is.
The next time your reefer goes down, tell your shop that it's cheaper to pay a few thousand dollars incurred in finding a dealership of the brand reefer on your trailer than it is to try and dispose of a 100,000 dollar lost load due to no temp control. The longer you have to wait for this approval, the easier it is to see that load lost.
Time is particularly valued. If you the driver is not sufficiently valued as to sit around losing time waiting on people who wont talk to you or hang up.. then you need to find a different company to run for, hopefully with better people.48Packard Thanks this. -
The starter died, it was on cycle-sentry and would not start again as the temperature rose.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I would just quietly lose my fuel bonus and would have no recourse because i didn't follow procedure.x1Heavy Thanks this. -

It's no problem fixing a reefer. Someone will get that load, maybe you maybe someone else. But you are not loading that reefer until she is fixed.
I noticed you have another post with part of my own below this one. As far as the quietly losing the bonus, you never really had it. Im not surprised actually and frankly it encourages you to go find another company to run for.
It seems to me you cannot do anything without the company saying no if anything at all. You are going to ask yourself why are you even allowing such a company to have that kind of power over your own life on the road?
There is a awful lot of freedom to be gained provided you are always on time with your getting loaded and unloaded. Most everything else can be taken care of yourself without having to bother anyone. So if you have not already fixed your reefer, go get it fixed. Forget the year end bonus. If you claim perdiem on your taxes based on number of logged days away from home times a flat rate you will be able to deduct a great deal of your taxes, if not all of it. They can keep their precious little bonus. To me that bonus is something easily lost and not something to be used as a club to assure compliance with approved routes.
I think you are unhappy with your company. I encourage you to move along and perhaps find a better company where you will be happier and less encumbered by a stack of do nots and no this and no that.Big Don Thanks this.
