I don't remember hearing a bunch of air leaking into the tire, but I think that's probably what happened.

I carry a tool box on my truck. I need to get a pair of vice grip pliers and put them in my tool box. Excellent idea

Was the trailer brakes set when you first tried to release the tandem pins?If they aren't set the tandem pin release knob won't stay out on its own.

Set trailer brakes, pull plunger, rock trailer with the tractor to get stuck pins to release, slide tandems, push pluger back in or release trailer brakes to lock pins.

Metal parts wear, worn pins or tracks can cause pins to stick... By rocking trailer forward and back with the tractor while plunger is pulled should allow pins to release. Happens all the time.
