If you want to ask for a full blown inspection make sure its on a rainy day.

I was driving a truck that was in seriously bad condition and the guy I drove for refused to fix it. The tow truck driver said I could've stopped at a scale and told them the issues and that the owner refused to fix the truck and they would've did a inspection and the company and owner would only be ticketed but not the driver. I didn't do it though because I was scared I was going to be ticketed too.

It used to be that a driver could request an inspection. I have tried twice now both times I have been turned down. When I did volunteer I didn't get a ticket unless I had things wrong with my paperwork.

It never hurts to get a federal inspection done every few months by a real mechanic and not a parts changer.
-
You can
I had a guy BEG me to do one. Brand new truck, year old trailer. Said he got $50 bonus for clean inspection. I told him no, but he insisted...all said and done, he looked proud as a peacock until I gave him the inspection..with an OOS for inop stop lamps. Pigtail was bad...he knew it as soon as I told him, he had to crimp it that morning to leave,, and thought he did it well enough to get it back to yard for replacement.

If you want to "fly under the radar" or "go unnoticed", get a current CVSA sticker on your windshield. I requested a level one yesterday at Conejo (U.S. 101 in Thousand Oaks). CHP was glad to do it, I was there 20 minutes and rolled out with my orange sticker and a smile on my face.
Why not volunteer when you are not under a load or have an appointment to get to? If you are good to go, you dont have to worry about wasting time tomorrow when you are running late, if you have something wrong, you can deal with it and not upset a receiver. Spend an hour going over your equipment before you go get inspected. If you dont have the ability to spot something wrong, you should not be operating a CMV. Your job is to INSPECT that truck every day to insure that it is safe to operate. -
Yea, and right after I volunteer for an inspection I'll stop off and volunteer to give blood. Ain't neither one going to happen. Big difference in me checking out my truck and the DOT.

i have passed 2 full inspections this year and both times the officers refused to issue sticker and even noted on the inspection that no stickers where issued. So no i won't ask for DOT for anything
