The answer is yes. I took my test with the CA DMV on a Friday morning and passed, and Sunday night I was in a truck entering a Freeway closure loading and hauling KRail on a Bridge Construction job in downtown Los Angeles. One week later I was hauling 100' bridge beams / permit loads... NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE WHEEL. Let me just say that my butt cheeks were puckered up, eyes wide open, and hands at 10 and 2 gripping the wheel!

I have never pulled a trailer with walls. So yes, you can go straight into flatbedding.
