Reviving an old thread here. I own both a CDN and US carrier and I'm curious if I can lease a truck from the CDN carrier to the US carrier without having to 'import' the truck to the US (like you would need to do if it was purchased)??

Yes. I have had trucks leased to US carriers on both permanent and trip leases.

    Marmon110P Thanks this.

Ok, but is it as simple as a lease agreement at the DMV, or do I need to have the truck 'imported' to the US for them to find the VIN in their system so they can give me a US plate?

The trucks were never imported. In the trip-lease instance the truck remained registered and insured in Alberta and we just signed a new lease each trip.

In the permanent lease instances we have had the trucks registered in both Canada and the US (not the same truck at the same time, different instances). To be honest, I didn't handle the registration paperwork for those instances as we were supplying power units and I don't recall all the details. I had to go look at some pictures to see what plates were on the trucks.

It seems that if I am going to have the truck plated with the US carrier, then I actually do need to have it imported as if it was a purchase.
