Dude you will have to get tired enough to sleep! I went through this and I do know you don't feel like you will but you will!LOL its a short time with your mentor/trainer so when your on your own you will have a little more control of your sleep schedule, welcome to OTR and get used to it!lol Seriously (occaisionally use of sleep meds) will help, but you will just have to work hard and tire yourself out to sleep good,it sucks but aint the end of the world.Just keep a good attitude and know that you will be tired alot.

Warm milk with some honey mixed in it.

Isometric exercise while you're driving to work your muscles a little.

Autohypnosis: close your eyes and watch the swirling colors that you see when your optic nerves fire randomly because there isn't anything else for them to do. Or you can count slowly backward from 100, visualizing each number for a few seconds.

Keep your eye on the ball. This will not last forever and you will get your own truck. Make that your goal and tell yourself you're one day closer...another day closer...and another. Pretty soon those days will add up and you'll be there.

    Good luck to you.

Oh, yeah, and I forgot to add: make yourself a bedtime routine...maybe wipe the day's sweat off with wet wipes, put on some clean shorts, set up your bed so it's as comfortable as possible, pray (if that's what you do) think about your family and friends and then, when you lay down, clear your mind with the autohypnosis suggested above. Whatever your routine is, follow it each time you go to bed. You will find it helps prepare your brain for sleep.

i read this thread and spoke with a couple of guys, each having been driving more than 30 years each, who are now trainers...

Came back now to say that the common theme of thier responses was get on with a company who's trainers train rather than trying to turn the both of you into a temporary team operation!

Anyone else agree with that sort of thinking?

Agree completely tut. The problem is getting things enforced that are company policy in the first place. A decent trainer will not have a trainee driving while the trainer is sleeping for the first week or two minimum.

First priority. USE THAT STRAP! If there is an accident you will become one of many things flying around the cab! I know a team, she was sleeping in a T600 and he hit a truck that did not pull all the way across the line. She was a BBW and she took out the shifting tower, and destroyed the dash not to mention all her broken bones! USE THE STRAP! It's there for a reason! It's the bunks seat belt! Look under the mattress!

A simple exercise for falling to sleep. I've used this in military vehicles, C130's 141's but not Hueys as they were just to much fun! Even if I couldn't lay down. Those who know understand! They never made a seat for them that were anywhere close to comfortable!

Yes, have the sleeper at a comfortable temperature you like. cooler is better.

Lay on your back, arms down your sides but not touching your body.
Relax completely and yes you can. think of that bouncing and swaying as a gentle rocking.

Start with your feet and talk to them. Yeah I know what most of you are thinking! Stop it!

Tell them to relax. concentrate on the toes and get them to relax then the foot part and work up to the ankles, then the caves and thighs and up.
Work on your stomach. Relax your body. Unclench your fingers and then work on your hands and arms and work up to your neck. Relax! Stop tightening your legs and arms you have to get the body to relax and then work on your brain. You do not think of anything else, The truck is not jerking but rocking. Use it like a hammock! Stop hearing, turn off your hearing, turn off your brain and when you wake up in the morning you'll be pretty well relaxed.
    It does work!

If you're a side sleeper then you can make this work but you must relax! If you put your arm over your head to "hold" the pillow relax your fingers! Stop shaking your foot! Stop thinking about that hot young thing you saw or that hunk! When you learn how to turn off your body you'll get better and more sleep!

Laying there thinking of all the whats and wherefores of the day will keep you awake!
Learn to relax! That's why some people have a hard time GOING or falling to sleep. They can't or haven't figured out how to turn off the body and stay tense or hold the pillow or shake the foot. It's mainly how to learn to relax, control the heart beat and turn off the body! Learn bio feed back and control the heart and blood pressure. And that you can do! My last time in the hospital before surgery The nurse took my BP twice and could not figure out why it was as low as it was as most people going into surgery are tense. I let it increase just to show her it's doable! Did it on that last physical abilities test too! 118/71 after that exercise! I think the therapist thought I was dead!

Once you get it figured out you can fall asleep anywhere you want and learn to wake up when you want without an alarm clock!
OK class yoga is over for today!
Just relax and the rest is easy!
