You dont have to. I would run it till you have a reason. Excessive blowby or mixing fluids

Milton cat....... there’s your warranty. You’ll spend $30K.

In New Hampshire a guy named Doug Burdick is a cat expert.....

To answer Ridgeline, no, not yet anyway. I have minimal blow by, no fluids are mixing, still feels very strong at 910,000. I’m the only one who has driven it since I bought it with 173,000 on it. It’s just that I’ve heard so many horror stories about the final cost of the rebuild that I won’t even think about taking it to my local Cat dealership. Yes I want Cat to rebuild it, but I want an honest and reliable dealership to do it. I’m based in the NY, NJ,Conn area but I wouldn’t mind going a little further when the time comes. Unless I sell it before then.

Rods and mains, @ 1,000,000 for peace of mind? Not terribly expensive.

Honestly engine work is not as big a deal as everyone thinks it is. 95% of it is following the proper service procedures in the manual and taking the time to make sure all the adjustments are correct during reassembly. I'd be more concerned about the cleanliness of the shop. I've been through some truck dealers where they've got engines opened up with all the shop doors wide open, dust blowing everywhere. There is really nothing special about a 6NZ Cat. They get rebuilt all the time just like every other engine on the market and Cat has all service literature available for 98% of everything they've ever built on their SIS web. A trained monkey could read the overhaul procedure and do it.

Here is a better video of explaining an overhaul on Caterpillar. No BS or claiming parts are specially made by him.

SAR, Brettj3876, Rideandrepair and 5 others Thank this.
