Do companies allow this if drivers want to save money on rent.

I've done that 100 times at least. Met another driver that had been living in his truck for 7 years. He was happy and banking majority of his paychecks. He used a mail service for his mail/packages, etc.

Where else would you take a 34 when out of hours?

It isn't about allowing or saving rent, it is hours of service rules.
If you run out of hours on your 70 hour clock you have to stop for 34 - unless you have recap hours coming in before that.

Best to plan such things so you don't end up someplace you don't want to be.

Now now now"…”everyone knows”:D… that’s why you’re required to bring a tent. You have to take your 34 outside the truck in your tent. Doesn’t matter if you run out of hours on a roadside. Doesn’t matter if it’s 20 below zero out. It’s your problem. Ya think the company is in the business of hotelling drivers in the truck? Its 34 time and you’re out on your own. :biggrin_25521:

Many if not most companys would be ESTATIC to have a driver who more or less lives in the truck. Its always moving and making money with minimal downtime or stupid requests for home time......so....big yes unless your slipseat or something.

The longer you spend in the truck making money, the happier the company will be.

When I started as a company driver I got rid of my appartmemt, got rid of a ton of stuff, and basically moved back in with my mother. Put what was left of my stuff in a spare room at her house and used her address as my physical address.

I stayed on the road for 4-6 months at a time and went 'home' to visit her for a week or two. Did it that way for 4 years, basically living in my truck. Was doing reefer so most of my 34s came from waiting for Tyson or JBS loads, but was a few times that my hours where low while under a load so took one at a nice place.

Last week there was a big College Football game in Athens Ga. When I was active and the freight allowed for it I would go rent a hotel room for a night and watch a game. Part 395 does not say anything about where you are as long as you are off duty for 34 hours and I think now at least one midnight period. Most carriers don't care if you are in the truck, at home, or at a hotel. They just want the truck parked securely. I remember taking a 34 at the same place I unloaded. I had access to a TV, and a shower and could have food delivered. After a few years of driving, you start to find places like this one. Almost all urban areas had a place you can park and the cops would not bother you, well at least they did until drivers started dumping trash and drawing in lot lizards and drug activity. Oh well!

The requirements for once in 168 hours and the 2am to 5am restrictions were removed from the 34 hour reset requirement several years ago if that's what you were referring to.
