I'm doing exactly that. Until I make the move to Iowa I'll be going to school there (For my CDL).. which means having an address for the DOL through relatives.
Be aware though that for tax purposes (I know you're young-but have to say it) If you claim an address that isn't in your home state then technically you moved. Some states are finicky that way and wonder how you lived in two states. (For me you wait for the tax year to end because otherwise the wife lives in one state and I live in another and then you file jointly and it can get complicated)
I know it will be easier for you... but this is for everyone thinking of multiple addresses and CDL schools, etc...
Can I get a Class A CDL at age 18 in the state of New York?

Yeah, he may have to grow up fast and use a relatives address as a permanent address, then visit the parents. I think an 18 year old that's a resident of another state can drive into the state of New York on business, ie. hauling freight because it's only temporary. Do some research to verify if that's correct or not.

Definitely do your homework as Chinatown says.... Your young. Keep it slow paced and try not to get into a panic or feel you need to make decisions "Right Now". The Truck will be always be there.
...And keep that record clean.... -
Some household goods movers will let you travel the USA as a driver helper. You can't drive and don't need a cdl, but you'll see the 48 states. You'll learn a lot about trucking this way; everything you need to know, except the driving part. Probably be on the road 2 - 6 weeks at a time.
New World Van Lines is one that does that.
.
Iowa80 Thanks this. -
I remember her from the China beach series...
Looks just as great now. -
It means you cant drive the truck outside of NY. You can leave for vacation ect. Its not house arrest.

Oh and by the way I got my class A license at 18 in NY back in 1980.
I hauled livestock with in NY state and couldn’t leave the borders with a tractor and trailer till I turned 21.
I not sure what the rules are now in ny but I also would be interested know what the current law is. -
Can’t do that now. Class A in NY one has to be 21. For Class B or C 18 is sufficient, but A is 21.

wow, thank you for the information!
