    WannaBe/Newbie here..............

I don't want to start out on a negative note but some of you guys can be a little harsh on the wannabe's around here..... remember, you all had to start somewhere.... so try to be nice....:biggrin_25514:

I think I may have an orginal question? Does anyone out there think it is possible to "try trucking" before making a life/career changing decision this big?

I am a teacher. Because I am a teacher, I have a fairly light work schedule. I work from 7:45 - 3:10. I have weekends, holidays and summers off. (I actually work 180 days a year). My last child is almost done baking (its a joke).... she will be going to college next year.

I have always wanted to drive a truck.
I have no doubt that I can learn to drive a truck - very well I am sure.
I have the money to pay for a CDL mill/school or whatever....
I behave myself when I am on the ROAD driving:
I drive 100+ miles daily commute.
Tickets: I have received 2 tickets in the last 20 years. The last one was 2 or 3 years ago (I stopped over the white line at a stop sign).
Accidents: I have been rear-ended twice in 25 years. Once in a Taco Bell drive through (she hit me three times)... and the other one was 2 Christmas Eve's ago sitting on an off ramp of Hwy 99 in Bakersfield (some of you may have noticed our off ramps are not long enough?)....
    I am in good health.
    I am single.

I am considering going to a school for the next few weeks (evenings and/or weekends) and then trying to find someone who will let me drive this summer (obviously as a trainee first and then probably a team?)

Do you think I should tell potential carriers that I am only "trying out their career"? Or, should I approach this summer with "I want a job" and then tell them I changed my mind ........... if I do?

What would you guys do if you were in my position (and do not tell me to run the other way):biggrin_25522:

I know what I am getting into for the most part. I just don't know if I will still find a challenge in it a few months down the road.

By the way, I HAVE been lurking around and reading for the last few weeks........... I appreciate the information:yes2557:

So, other than wanting to be a truck driver possibly not being my brightest life decision...... any comments, concerns or suggestions?

One suggestion: you need not pay hi-fees to get your CDL. some of the training CO's have there own schools, and if you stay a year, it's cost is minimal.
You also don't necessarily need to disclose your intent on longevity. There turnover is quite high. My old fleet manager is now in recruiting. Our 1795 truck co'. hires 300 driver's a month...(that's to the terminal).
So, don't hesitate, don't overspend to learn, and Dive on in.

Ps. up(or down) thread is my 1st year earnings , just updated tonight.

What your looking for is considered "casual". Yes, you could get a job like that. But, I'm not sure how difficult it would be with a lack of experience.

trucking is a good career if you are up to it. it is demanding and rewarding in it's own ways. I wouldn't tell anybody you are just trying it out though even though they really don't care. they are just happy to have one less truck sitting if even for a few weeks

A little off-topic, but I just had to bust up laughing when you said she hit you three times.

Anyway, don't tell them you plan to do a "test drive". If you don't like it after you try it, quit like the other 90%.

The drive thru is funny NOW.
    It was not then!

Drunk lady rammed into the back of my car while I was ordering.
She was driving a 1970's Torino and I was in a little Spectrum.
She got out and looked at the cars.
I got out and yelled at her to get back in her car and put it in park!
(my car was being scooted a few inches at a time)
She had gotten out of the car while it was still in drive!
Since she stood there looking stupid - I explained that she was using my car as a door stop and it was still in drive.
She got back in her car and proceeded to put it in reverse.
Then she put it in drive again and hit my car the second time while I was still standing there.
This time she put it in park and got out again.
I asked her what the #### she was doing?
She said "What is your problem?"
I said you hit my car - twice!
I told her I was getting in my car and pulling into a space by the side so we could check for damage.
She seemed confused but nodded her head.
I got back in my car, put it in drive AND SHE HIT ME AGAIN!
I got out of the car and yelled a few profanities at her.
She got out of her car and said "What?"
I asked the janitor guy who was watching all this if we were on Candid Camera?
The lady walked over and looked at my bumper (plastic and it kept popping back out - didn't look damaged)
She said she didn't see any damage and I SHOULD GET IN MY CAR AND SHUT UP BECAUSE SHE WAS HUNGRY.
I said I was not getting back in my car - she had hit me 3 times!
    She said "Are you hurt?"
I said "Are you going to keep hitting me until I am?"

I made the janitor hold her keys while I got my car out of the drive thru.
She got her food from the window and drove home.
Officer went and found her at home and could only cite her for hit and run.
He said she was obviously drunk but because he hadn't seen her he couldn't site her.
She ate her taco's while he went over the citation with her..........

This is my life - typical - you have NO IDEA how many of these stories I have!:yes2557:

Can't resist, one more - this is my life.

This weekend I went to Lowes.
I got a shopping cart from outside where they store them.
I got 3 items and put them in my cart.
I went and stood at the paint counter while the boy mixed some paint for me.
While I was standing about 10 feet from my cart (still at the counter)........
    A woman walked over,
Took my 3 items out of my cart and set them on the counter,
She then put her purse in the seat and began to walk away,
    with my cart,
I was trying not to laugh hysterically as 10 people stared at her with their mouths dropped open,
Even the paint boy was in statue mode.
The man next to her said "Lady, I think that cart belongs to that lady" (and pointed to me)
The lady said "I didn't see her holding on to it - and I put the stuff on the counter where anyone can find it."
She then walked away with my cart.

Gotta love people............. they certainly never stop surprising me :biggrin_2559:

Stories like this are why I still frequent the lounges at the truck stops. Too bad he couldn't get her for drunk driving--I would've taken the keys and made her wait for the police. Very funny, indeed.

I was in a rather humorous answer to your first post, using a lot of quotes etc when my Firefox dumped me and said it had to close.

I'm not even gonna TRY to repeat it.

However, I think with your life position right now, you are in a good position to try this. Much better than most of us were when we got into it.

You might check with Kern Community College and see if they have a Professional Truck Driver's School. If they do, it will save you a LOT of money over a private school. And you don't even want to THINK about signing on with a "company school!"

With all the trucking in and around Beautiful Bakersfield ;) you certainly should be able to come up with something. Obviously your old tickets won't be any problem.

Now as to your accidents, I hope you learned something: DON'T BLOCK A HUNGRY DRUNK AT A DRIVE UP WINDOW!:biggrin_25523:

Better yet, don't block a car/SUV full of them, even if the driver is sober. Ever had a drunk tell you to hurry up and push the gas pedal for you at a Taco Bell drive-thru?
