yeah, i know. it's one thing i wish i could have in a truck with me. not so much for people (tho as a female driver going solo, it might be reassuring), but for the wildlife. if i hit a roo or something and don't kill it outright, i'd like a quick and effective way of putting it out of it's misery.

I'm sorry but your advice shows you've never been in a tanker. There's a lot of difference and you've got to know it right away or you could be in real trouble. That's mainly why companies want drivers with tanker experience. It's extremely difficult to find a job hauling gasoline without tanker experience. But just like everything else there are exceptions. Your best bet is to go OTR. It's great that you want to set your goals on a type of tucking that pays a little more than just hauling freight. Whatever you do make sure you have a good trainer to show you the specific handling characteristics of a tanker. Then you build your career as a experienced tanker driver and go for the jobs that pay the best. You'll need a clean record and a good work history to show and then YOU'LL be in demand.

I was in the Navy and we pulled into Perth. I'd almost go and drive for free if I could go there. What a great place.

I disagree. It's quite different. Reefer and vans do not surge like a smooth bore tanker.

I agree. The first time I had a hard surge I thought the 5th wheel got ripped clean off the truck. Scared the bejesus outta me. Tankers are hard on trucks. Nothing like pulling a reefer or dry van.

There is a reason a company is offering a sign on bonus......usually means they're a crap company. A good company wouldn't have to pay a "bonus" to lure employees.

Not always true. Sometimes if they have a high turnover rate on a certain route they do the bonus to lock guys Into staying for at least a year. Normally the bonuses are paid out over a years time. Or if the route is a high demand route by the shipper and they are in bad need of drivers for the route they will also offer a sign on bonus.
