So a couple summers ago I thought it would be fun over a summer to take a CDL training course and get a CDL. I had a great time doing it but at the time I got some very off putting information from a couple of drivers and instead of actually researching if what they said had any merit I just decided ok I'll forget actually going into trucking.
I have since done research recently and talked to a couple people who are in the industry and from what they told me I am now ready to give trucking a shot.
Now there is nothing that would disqualify me from getting any trucking job except for the fact that this trucking job would be my first JOB. I have been fortunate in that I have not had to work and money is not an issue. So how big of an issue is not having ANY work history in getting a trucking job? I also will be taking a refresher course before I actually apply to any of these companies.
I am from Ohio so I think there is a decent variety of trucking companies that drive here so it seems finding a company is not an issue. I would like to drive OTR or do whatever the stay out for a month+ at a time is called. The biggest thing for me in finding a company is good training and good equipment. The CPM/Miles per week not a concern for me so any suggestions on starter companies that have good training and good starter equipment? Also if there are any starter companies that will let you buy and have them install APU's?
I have also read on here which I was not aware of that some companies are putting voice recording devices in trucks? I would like to avoid companies that do that since that seems like quite a bit of invasion of privacy. The front facing camera I figured is now pretty standard and I would install my own if the company didn't have those. Hopefully my company requests aren't out of the realm of possibility!!
EDIT: Only slight issue I had back when I got my CDL was downshifting so I guess I'd prefer a company that the likelihood of getting an auto transmission truck is high but obviously I am going to try this either way.
Can I get hired?

Working or not, you will have to account for the last 10 years.
If you were not working you can get notarized letters from friends or family members to help verify what you were doing and where you were.
Time in school can be accounted for by a transcript.
Why would you buy an APU? They are very expensive.
If a company doesn't provide an APU you will simply idle the truck when you need to. Simple.
You can do very well on the truck with a small inverter and a few 12V appliances.
No voice recorders are being installed. They are video camera's that face both forward and into the cab.
But yes, they also record audio.
Some are set up to record only when you are driving, and some record 24/7. -
Ok that is simple then. I know an APU is expensive but I read that companies have strict idle rules so I figured if I just buy an APU I can be comfy in the truck no matter what.
I mean I would obviously prefer like most I'm sure not to be recorded 24/7 or is that just the way the industry is going? Are companies honest when asked about what types of recording devices they put into trucks? -

Buy an APU? Are you independently wealthy? You mentioned pay not being a concern.
Just curious. Your post sounded more like you want to fulfill a dream than you actually need a job/career. Where in Ohio are you?rachi Thanks this. -

Just apply for jobs and tell the recruiters you're prepared to add 5-6 thousand bucks worth of equipment to THEIR truck.
You'll find a job lolCanned Spam, rachi, Mudguppy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Did you file taxes during all this time not working? If so, that will show you had money and didn't have to work.
OK, cpm and miles not an issue, but you want nice trucks with Apu's and willing to run all over and stay out.

Do the online application then follow with a phone call. This way, when you do call, they have an application to look at while talking to you. You can tell them, "I'm checking on the application I submitted online."
Some of these may hire you with further training at their facility and some may not hire you.
