Some drivers rarely drive at night; just luck of the draw. Much depends on your time management and appointment times.

You may or may not stay in the same truck for a long period of time. Point is, it's very doubtful they would let you add an APU unless you agree to leave it on the truck... then you would likely be swapped to every truck they own..lol. Just forget the APU. If it is really important to you to have one, choose a company that definitely has them on their trucks. As for idle restrictions, yes you may run into that. Every company does different, some a very lenient, some would rather you freeze to death than idle their truck.

Research is your only option. Know what your signing up for before you take the job. The situation you are looking for in out there, you just have to find it. Make a checklist and start your research... APU yes/no, auto yes/no, driver facing cameras yes/no...and so on. Once you have a company or 3 on your radar, search them out here and/or ask questions, start a thread for comments on the company. It's likely someone here has worked for them, especially if it's a large carrier.

I think I have decent time management skills always rather be early some place than late so hopefully the same thought process can be applied to trucking.

I very much DONT want to work for a company that would want you to freeze. Now I guess it would be silly if I didn't ask about how many miles a week on avg a driver for a company gets. Is there a ballpark figure I should want to hear from a company? Also I guess it gets tied into CPM. I assume if a company has high CPM but way below avg miles per week that is not good for me since I want to be driving and not sitting. So at what point is there a decent balance between CPM and miles per week? I am also positive I won't be one of those truckers trying to drive the wheels off the truck trying to make every cent possible. So I dunno if that adds or removes some companies from the equation because I would prefer NOT to be driven into the ground.

With electronic logs you won't be driven into the ground.
Cpm isn't the only pay you will receive; companies also have accessorial pays. For example, Jim Palmer Trucking cpm equals .45 cpm with the fuel bonus added in plus other accessorial pays.
The webites usually have accessorial pays listed under "Driver Benefits"

Here's a TransAm benefit: TransAm is excited to announce that we will be installing DIRECTV in our trucks at no charge to our drivers! The package includes a 24" flat screen tv, DVR and access to more than 100 channels including the NFL Sunday Ticket and HBO. We are always on the lookout for ideas to improve the quality of our driver's lives on the road and we hope this service is a great benefit for our drivers. Condo cabs, dual bunks, refrigerators, CD players, Auxiliary Power Units, inverters and are satellite radio-equipped.

Most of the companies I listed have similar driver comfort features including refrigerator.

I guess I'm just kinda baffled as to why a rich man wants to play truck driver for fun. This is a hard and often dangerous job with loooong hours. And the pay, especially for an inexperienced driver, leaves a lot to be desired, even by blue-collar standards. If i, thru some miracle of God, were to ever become independently wealthy I would never want to lay eyes on one of these stupid trucks again.

Warren Buffet drives a used Taurus and lives in a cheap house he bought in the 1950's.

That may be true, but you won't catch him working for Swift.
