I'm new to trucking. If I get my CDL, buy a tractor and trailer, and apply for my own authority, can I haul freight on the load boards / broker boards without any previous trucking experience? Do I have to become a company driver or an owner-operator first?
Can I get my own authority and haul freight without experience?

Experience is never required but it comes in oh so handy.
You will find lots of brokers and shippers will not deal with you until you have an authority of a set age. 30 days for some, six months for others. You will pay higher for insurance. So, without experience you need deeper pockets.cnsper and jyoungrrt12 Thank this. -
Brokers will use you. That waiting period is a myth. Your insurance will likely be cost prohibitive though.

What is your exit plan after you decide trucking isn't all grins and giggles?

Drive somebody else's truck for at least six months. Learn how to drive first then take on the challenge of being in business for yourself.

What is a myth? A lot of brokers do use new authority right away, but for example Xpo requires 3 months of active authority, Schneider and JB hunt 6 months, ABF and Old Dominion require a year. Paramount requires two yearsjyoungrrt12 Thanks this.

I have never dealt with any of those except xpo. And rarely. And I do quite well. There are plenty of brokers that will use you.
jyoungrrt12 Thanks this.
