I presently have a truck and trailer and live in ny. The DMV is still closed . I will be moving to Florida in a month or so and want to register it down there upon arrival. I have DOT/MC numbers (inactive from my previous tractor a while ago) I only have a Michigan title for tractor but the trailer is registered in Maine. What's the easiest way to register right now to get the truck and all my HHG in it to Fla, then reactivate my numbers or fully reactivate everything ? Thanks in advance
You don’t need operating authority to haul your own stuff. I’d just check in to temporary registration and insurance to get you down to FL.
And to be clear. it's better to not activate your DOT number. You don't want to have to convince any officers you are not pulling for a business and have a newly reactivated DOT show up. Way too many questions. Get a temp registration, insurance and you should be good to go. That is assuming your state allows it . Some states like PA only has 2 options. 1. RV and must have several RV features to title it as such and 2. CMV. There is no way to register a heavy vehicle as personal use.
Thank you for the feedback. Just can't seem to figure out how to put it all together and pull it off with the dmv still shut down though. It seems like I would need to have a legitimate address in another state to avoid going thru NY. The kicker is we have a Florida address but that house won't close until beginning of august!
Plus, it's not just NY that the DMV is shut down. This may be one of those cases you simply can't do what you want and have to hire someone for the move. It blows, but it is what it is.
Not for hire doesn’t mean jack, if anything they will want to pull you over and try and talk To you just to find out what your doing, temp trip permit/reg/insurance and run it.
In maine and new Hampshire. We can go to the town hall to register the vehicles. We really only go to the DMV for transferring in from out of state. Or licence issues. Can it be done by mail?
It means everything and don’t understand your point? Any rig can get pulled over anytime for any reason. Running not for hire or for hire has no bearing on this
