Is 20,000 dollars net pay a good expectation for the first year of trucking? Anyone made less?

$20,000 actually seems fairly reasonable. Even low, if the economy gets back on it's feet, and drivers start getting some decent freight.

Boy isnt that true! Had an O/O switch to my terminal and all he did was ##### and complain, they put a notice on his truck so that when planners would look up his truck to send him a load it would say in BIG FLASHING RED LETTERS "Will not accept load over 25,000"

All negative actions have a consequence! I made 32k my first year, not great but the beginning of last year SUCKED. On track to make 40k as it is now, but freight will pick up soon and I estimate 45-50k EASY. It might not be as good as the "old days" but its a hell of a lot more than landscaping and more than I made as a factory mechanic for Alcoa.

In this economy, first year OTR at a Swift or Werner type, I'd say yes its fair to expect at least 20K net. Man that sucks! You really have to love driving around or need a job really bad to do this!

You'll make maybe a little more than that. WIth the economy now you can expect 1800-2000 miles a week, starting at maybe .27-.28 run 1900 miles a week and the gross is about $513 then at .34 a mile its $646 and then run your numbers from there. This summer you might get 2000-3000 a week into the fall.

If you're really interested in what you'll make just figure when you get those raises. Also if you run alot of shorter loads under 300m you will make more depending on the company, if I run anything under 100 miles I get a $25 shorthaul "bonus" and every mile is at .44 And you do one of those, then you get a longer load, it all adds up. There are alot of variables as you can see.

Long answer for a short question. Short answer? Yes :D

And yes it sucks but compare it against most other entry level jobs and its typically much better.

A little below average for a normal week (normal is around 2k miles).......

    An exceptional week.........

Somewhere in the middle. You're not likely going to be paying much taxes at the end of the year (because of the DOT per diem meal deduction), so take your taxes back for your net.

Roughly 40 a week for insurance (single no kids).

These are actual paystubs from swifty. You start at .25 cpm now so multiply that by 2000 miles per week.
