I am considering getting a flatbed trailer to start hauling lumber. Now understand first of all, I am 31 with a 2 year old daughter and pregnant wife so home time and lifestyle are more important to me than money.
Anyway, a local lumber mill will hire me to do dedicated short haul work for them, home daily, for $3.54 a loaded mile. It’s no back haul, just dead head back.
I’m trying to decide if I could make it work, and about how many miles I would need to average a day to make it work. Does this sound reasonable to anyone running local? I’ve ran local for years, but it’s always been by the ton not by the mile so I’m a little confused what’s ok and what’s not.
Can I make a living with this haul?

Be tough if you've got financed equipment I would think. What area are you in? Not hard to p I ll in 6-7k a week right now and be out 2 nights working 4 days. That won't last forever though

I personally don’t see it working. It would for a while but as you need to do repairs you’ll be robbing your pay check to do it.
Im not familiar with Arkansas but I’ll look around at it. There’s got to be better out there.Lostkeys, feldsforever, Big Road Skateboard and 1 other person Thank this. -

I see a Russellville to Tulsa with a $1071 15 day avg for tomorrow through Landstar. Doesn’t mean they are paying that though. Still, better then the lumber deal even if coming back empty.

It’s simple math.
Take all your expenses and what you need to live with money left over for savings.
Ex. $5000 / month divided by $3.54 a mile.
For $5000 in gross a month you will need 1412 miles a month.
Let’s say you work Monday to Friday that’s only 70 miles per day.
Up the amounts need and do the same calculations to figure it out.D.Tibbitt, NavigatorWife and OldeSkool Thank this. -
