You’re leaving a lot of money on the table. My company driver pulls $2,000 checks and is home every weekend in sucky FL. You say you make $800 more but pay for fuel, insurance, truck and trailer? That’s crazy.
Can I make a living with this haul?

Local short haul needs to be around 6.00-7.00 mile in order to be profitable running loaded 1 way. Not counting the northeast, not many other places you can get those types of rates. Lately I've been running loaded 1 way, 1 load a day & 410 miles for the round. Comes out to a 3.17 a mile.
Could do better grabbing a load coming back towards the house but then I'll have a day tied up with that and miss another good paying load. Could of came right back empty and pick up another 1300 load for the next day. Or that reload could go sideways and make me miss a pickup later in the dayLast edited: Nov 21, 2021

I think the consensus is hard pass on that one. Local work is long days and racing back and forth in your personal rig from the house for a crappy 6-7 hours of sleep. It’s gotta pay or forget that noise. Go out on the road for a couple nights and you’ll make better money and still be home plenty. That type of work always seems to wear me out a little less if it’s a nice steady routine and doesn’t seem quite as boring as the same ole’ bull 5 days a week. You get a get a little windshield time and truck stop action. A little adventure if you will.
