I get sent everywhere year around! Right into inner city Philly and Baltimore, I70 in a blizzard, it doesnt matter. I think those dispatchers enjoy hazing rookies.

Thought id be fine at that speed. Had Fedex go blasting past me with his chains on a lot faster than that.

How fast you can go depends on how good and tight you can get them ALL on. Using bungees or spiders does not count towards tightness. These are going to stretch whatever the chain hookup and adjustment allows once you go over about 20-25 mph. I’m not saying these are not necessary. I’m saying they should not be relied on to compensate for improper application of chains.

It took me over an hour out there trying to get the tightness. When i finished there was no slack anywhere. Couldnt feel my hands at all.

Then another young driver comes up to my truck and asked if I had any tips for him. He was wearing a thin sweater and sweatpants. Told him best tip i could give him is to dress warmer than that.

If you have some “beat up” chains with multiple thin links from beating against this or that on prior uses, they are going to fail sooner or later requiring replacement or corrective actions with repair links.

I like to carry multiple pairs of gloves. They wear out fast when they get wet. If you have multiple pairs you can keep swapping them out when they get wet.

Thick insulated gloves can be hard to work with for some and useless when wet. I prefer to have 4 sets of cheaper leather gloves and I’ll always have a dry pair to start with.

True. i got this advice ^ when I was new and asked the same thing. And it’s true. Buy several cheaper medium weight ones. Throw the wet ones up on the defrost and cycle through to your next dry pair. I keep 6-7 pairs.

Had to go back through the same pass and had to chain again!! Didn't lose any today and got them on fast. I got experience with chains like in a different way. So you know it helps i guess.

Maybe I should be one of those guys that hangs out at the chain station and fleeces drivers for 250.00 or whatever ridiculous amount they charge.
