I am trying to get a grasp of what is typically available for loads in my area since it would have an influence on what kind of truck (specs) I would be looking to buy. I can't seem to sign up for load boards without an MC number, and the free-look load boards don't seem to have many loads.
I realize most loads are not on the boards, but I think it worth while to be able to watch what is on DAT over several weeks/months as part of the research while I save money for a truck.
I have gone direct with several local companies and I can get all the frieght I want ... but I haven't discussed rates with them yet (don't want to before I know my know my mpg, truck payment -if any- and other expenses) and I expect that I would be looking at very low rates.
So, if anyone knows how I might do that, I am all ears.
I contacted DAT weeks ago but I haven't heard back from them yet.
Thanks in advance.
Can I sign up for 360 DAT without a motor carrier number?

Don't know if you can but if so get ready for several weeks of dissapointment with maybe a glimmer of hope here and there. Most times the price is not posted - have to call. Spot is not the same animal as direct. Most brokers if you call and don't have an MC will hang up. Not all of them ask for it up front though. Some wait until after the price is agreed.

Why do you need a loadboard if you can get all the freight you want?(without a truck, authority, trailer............)

Clasix1055, as I mentioned just after that comment:
"... but I haven't discussed rates with them yet (don't want to before I know my know my mpg, truck payment -if any- and other expenses) and I expect that I would be looking at very low rates."
They already have a dedicated carrier moving their stuff now, and I am sure that I could only compete for some of the loads by being cheaper. -
OK .... I don't know

You need an active MC number with most of the loadboards. 360 is rather expensive. If you are a member of OOIDA, you may want to subscribe to their loadboard. They call it www.mymembersedge. It is one of the DAT boards. They have about 5 different loadboards under different names.

G/MAN,
Yes, that was my first choice and I would like to join OOIDA, but I need to have an MC # first to join ... -
You can go to the OOIDA site and then to the Member's edge, and then take the free tour. Just bookmark it and it will let you search and watch the loads, you just can't see all the info--like who to call. But that's probably good because when you do call these guys and the # of miles is greater than the # of $, you'll just wish you didn't call in the first place. But seriously, I watched this board for a while this way before I joined. Got me familiar with when they posted and where to, ans DH from home and so on.

I have Members Edge through OOIDA membership that is the DAT board.

Turnanburn,
Thank you! I will try that.
