I use rubber straps to tie down am extra short hose to the trailer fender that I don't have any room for in my hose compartments.

...all the more reason to maintain proper following distance. That car was following at LESS THAN 1/2 of a second! Not even enough time to say "Oh ####!" Had the car been maintaining 2 seconds (or more), the timber wouldn't have gone through the windshield.
I have no sympathy for tailgaters. -
Well in my Case I was following at the correct distance , timber bounced twice and as it was very windy ( heading into the wind ) the wind caught it on the 2nd bounce and that was it.

I had a short section of 1/4" chain and a 1/4" binder to hold my timbers on the landing gears....had used ratchet straps, but after having to cut one off because it was iced up, I knew I had to find a better alternative.

Here's the reg that everyone should read FMCSR §393.102. Any tie-down strap must be rated for breaking strength if used.

There are "requirements" and there is enforcement. How many pick-ups do you see running down the highway with mattresses/dressers etc. in the back ? Not secured ? And how often do you see mattresses laying in the roadway ?

imagine what those mattresses were used for.....
