To summarize my experience and hope it helps those in the future those, who are looking to get from Reno, NV to Eureka part of CA (with a 53" trailer or not).

    1) Susanville, CA to Redding, CA via CA36 - CA 44 - CA 89 - Eastern CA 299. Nothing special except a few tough uphills. Good road surface.

    2) Redding, CA to Eureka, CA (I-5 to HWY 101 via CA 299). Western CA 299 - this is where the fun begins. It's the whole trip of steep ups and even more steeper downs on a pretty narrow serpentine. The following is to note:
    - You don't rush. I mean you have a PLENTY of time to your del.
    - You expect to arrive in the daylight.
    - You're ok with going 25 mph uphill and then downhill at the same speed for 10-15% of the total trip.
    - Your tanks are full. Haven't seen truck fuel stations just regular stations.
    - Your load has a low gravity center and it's something you can secure really tight. Otherwise add extra 1-2 hours.
    - Speed signs rule - take at least 10 mph off. They're very optimistic.
This is a 6 hour trip from Susanville to Eureka 101. Consider this a "vocational trip" - you're driving on a nice road, enjoying the views, can stop to plunge in a beautiful Whiskeytown lake, and, again, have nowhere to rush. I treated it like that and enjoyed it. The scenery in this period of time - fog, golden leaves with green pines, crystal clear water and tall mountains - simply gorgeous.

p.s. Further North on 101 - delivers similar experience but adds cops, traffic and some more chances to speed up. Some hills are more steeper than on CA 299.

For anyone who has this question again. I ran 199 from Grants Pass to 101 when I first started. Using my old 210" WB Volvo WIA and my 48' spread.

I made it, but i shoulda asked here first.

Lots of hairpin curves where you can't see traffic coming, and my steer tires would be over one lanes white line, while my trailer was over the line of the opposing lane.

Can't imagine any normal lenth truck and trailer going down it safely. I got lucky
