Okay ill throw my 2 cents in here.
I live in the South and started working at a cotton Gin driving their yard truck feeding the gin cotton modules.. and when the flat bed that had to go to the compress was full i would drive it there. Since i was working for farmers, farm related work, you really dont need a CDL to drive. Think the law is like 90 air mile radius you dont for farm work. Anyways i did that for 2 seasons then decided to go work for Budweiser. Started going with the drivers and learning as i went. When i was ready and been studying the book enough i went to take the written test. past it and company let me use their trucks to take the driving test. Passed it no problem. Worked for them for a bit before they decided to fire me over BS. This was back in 2004. Worked for other companies not using my CDL then left a company. was on unemployment and had to get a job. Found a local Company that needed drivers to haul seed and chemicals. They required Hazmat. Company boss asked how hard it would be for me to obtain my Hazmat endorsement. Said only taking the test. they hired me and been with them ever since. Now the only problem with how i obtained my CDLs is when i wanna go over the road to a major trucking company by me not going to the trucking school alot of them wouldnt even bother hiring me. A few said that i would have to go to their trucking school first before even getting hired. Currently one im talking with Central Refrig. said that i can go with them just have to pass my road test to prove i can drive and all if i fail then ill have to go to their schooling for a refresher course. Then head on with a trainer.
Personally if i was you. and you would want to get your CDLs just for local ONLY. then take the test yourself and all would be cheaper most likly then going to a major company just to get them and then quitting before going over the road any with a trainer or anything.
But if you wanna make sure you got a job later in life stick with the company and do over the road for at least a year. that way you would have at least a years experience under your belt and can go elsewhere and not worry about anything. -
Also little added info. Central Refrigeration has i believe a 2 week schooling program then when you have your CDLs youll be teamed with a trainer for up to 5 weeks. From what i heard, and dont quote me on this because i didnt do the research, They are the fastest training company out there. but also be prepared to learn fast otherwise youll be recycled and it wouldnt be no fun. starting pay also is at .28 per mile.
