    Hey.

    2004 Frieghtliner Columbia

    400w Cobra Inverter

    6ft 8 gauge hot wire / 2ft ground wire

I will be using about 2 - 250 watts and id like to know if it is safe to connect to the battery lead next to the fuse box in the dash. I really wanted it next to the bunk running directly from the battery but can't seem to find anywhere appropriate to run the wire through unless I drill a hole.

Any advice helps. Thanks in advance.

Check the gadge of the wire heading into the fuse box. For only 400 watts you should be fine. Most of us drilla hole through the floor under the bunk and install a 1500+ watt inverter. Make sure whatever you do, you add a fuse. 400 watt should be 40 amp or so. You should take the peek (probably 500 on a 400 watt inverter) and divide by 11 volts (min the inverter will probably run at, used listed min if the inverter has a min voltage shut off on the label) and you get max amp draw. round up. A 500 peek watt comes out to around 45.4 so you would want a 50 amp fuse. Make sure the wire leading to it can support that kind of amperage pluss all the other loads.

I honestly don't know.. BUT I can tell you this, place a circuit breaker/fuse as close to the power source as possible.

i.e put an in line fuse at the power connection point..put an in line fuse at end of power source, next to microwave, fridge etc and you have created X number of feet of red hot fire wire to burn your truck down.

When you see smoke, your first instinct is going to be, "grab the wire and pull" poof, your hands are on fire.

They make a Inverter that you can plug straight into the Light plug, with out going to the troubles of doing all of that for 400 watts! Hope this helps.

400W will pop the 30A fuse on most accessory plugs.

Awesome. So as long as I have a fuse that is strong enough to break the cuircut ill be fine drawing this many watts from this specific location? Its 400w continuous 800 peak.

If you want to start a truck fire, then yes, wire it from the fuse box.

For that kind of current draw (supporting a 2kW inverter,) you need to run the cables directly from your batteries, keeping the cable runs as short as possible. Connect the fuse as close to the batteries as possible, and make sure you enclose the cables in wire loom so that you don't have a chaffing problem that will short the leads to the frame. Don't forget to hook the inverter frame ground back to the batteries as well.

Holy Moley, so wire directly to bat is the safest and my ground MUST lead back to the bat as well for 400w?

Im glad I caught your message before I started screwing around.

Question, I have a really good power strip with a surge protector built in. Will this temporarily substitute a fuse? Im already going to have to pick up longer ground wire and a drill.
