Driver gets paid a percentage of the gross, most of the ones I have heard about are 25 to 33 per cent, but the range varies more than that mostly lower.
If the truck is making 88 cents per mile, the driver or drivers would get 22 cents at 25%.
If the truck is making $1.40 per mile the driver would get 35 cents at 25%. -
Percentage pay "can" mean a better or higher pay check depending on the empty miles driven. That can be the killer in a good percentage pay program. For a "company" driver getting percentage pay it does mean a better CPM (cent(s) per mile) and for an O/O a lot better than this bottom feeder .79- .98 CPM + a piddling FSC!
You just have to manage and refuse those loads with higher MT miles which will cut into your "gross/net."
Now, a problem with percentage pay is are you getting the HONEST rate on the freight? Do NOT believe a dispatcher or load planner who "tells" you it pays so and so but doesn't show or give you a rate sheet or contract showing exactly what is being paid to the hauling company for the load. UNLESS you trust this person I'd just rather have everything in writing! The days of a handshake are long gone from trucking. -
thank you guys for answering my questions. i was not sure exactly what the percentage was a percentage of if that makes any sense.can you ask to see the contract so you know your being paid the right percentage

Another thing on %. When the freight rate is good it can pay very well. When the economy is bad it can put you in a soup line. When freight is being under bid by everyone you can make more money by mileage if you are paid the same rate bouncing or loaded.

I have never worked on mileage, just percentage. Where you can do very well this way is running short hauls (0 to 250 miles). Most companies have a minimum amount per truck load. As an O/O I get 72% of the line haul, 100% of the FSC, and accessory fees.
We do a lot of drop and hooks. I am given the rate prior to accepting the load. Works for me! As an example I pulled a load this morning a total of about fifty miles, drop and hook at both ends, paid me just under $150.0025(2)+2 Thanks this.
