Can truckers use the left lane ever when there are 3 lanes or more?

There are parts of I-85 in Anderson County, South Carolina that have signs posted marking the restricted lane for "X" miles. I've only seen them on the southbound side though.

Yeah in Illinois in the chicagoland is where they have signs saying no trucks in left lane for x amount of miles, then it switches to no trucks in two left lanes. But in Minneapolis/St. Paul area when im on 494 or 694 i will stay in the far left lane all the way through the city especially when you get close to the I35 interchanges been through there hundreds of times and found thats the easiest, safest, and fastest way through the cities.

Anyone know which states put points on your license for left lane violations? I know it's 3 points in North Carolina. What about IL, GA, MI, etc?

It can be a big no no to needlessly stay in the hammer lane too. In California if there are 2 or 3 lanes, trucks can only use the right hand lane. They may pass in the next lane over, but must return to the right lane (unless otherwise posted -- "trucks ok" etc). If there are 4 or more lanes, trucks can use both right lanes, but not the third (again unless otherwise posted or merging from the left).

Illinois does not have the law on the 255 loop around St. Louis and the areas north and south of Springfield and Bloomington. Never have seen signs there.

Last year my brother received a ticket for passing in the left lane of a 3 lane freeway in California. He elected to have Trial By Declaration and I helped him write his declaration to the court. In order to do the TBD he had to pay the $248 ticket when he sent in his declaration. He was charged under CVC 21654(c). Our argument was that the right two lanes were blocked by two bottom dumper trucks from the same company driving side by side less than the speed limit for an extended period of time. My brother elected to pass in order to avoid getting damage from gravel coming off the bottom dumpers and help clear an easier passing lane for following vehicles. The truck that should have been ticketed was the bottom dumper blocking the middle lane without completing a pass. California law states that a truck can use the left most lane in order to avoid obstructions (see CVC 21654(a)).

He received back a check for $248 with "Exonerated" on the stub.
