I recently had a truck go down and would like to switch 2290 form for heavy highway use tax to another truck I recently purchased. Is this possible?
Can you change 2290 form from one vin number to another vin?

No, you must file another 2290, as the HVUT is not transferrable. However, even though you cannot get a refund on the unused portion of the old one, you only pay from the month of first use on the new one. If the person, you are buying the new truck from has already filed a current 2290, you can use that one if they will give it to you, as it only needs to be paid once per year for that vehicle.

You DO get a refund for the portion of the paid 2290 that you do not use. I go to the state building in Indianapolis to pay my 2290 and last year when I sold one truck they gave me a refund of what was left.

You can transfer a 2290 if you have sold it,junked it. Transfer the old ones to new trucks all the time.

That is news too me. But, I haven't bought a truck since June 1999, either. I just keep paying on this one.

They prorate it by the month on transfers. Not too sure if it's month or quarter on an outright sale/junk.

Any relation to chadwick in brooksville FL?

The IRS changed the 2290 requirement a few years ago. At one time, if you sold the truck that you had already paid the 2290, you were out of luck if you sold it and bought a new truck. You can now transfer the unused portion to a newly purchased truck, providing you are taking the old truck off the road, sold it or junked it. There is a form you must file with the IRS, of course.
