Can you drive at night?

I've gotten used to it now and like it now that my body adjusted. Took a while. But if I have any significant off time my body goes back to being a night owl.

 

Driving day vs night is sleep deprived, you have to work into it gradually, make sure you have a great ac and can make your sleeper dark.

 

I agree with your comment. You are right in every regard. For rookies etc! My last year on the road I could sleep in a TS during the middle of July with the curtain open. I just developed over the years the ability to sleep almost anywhere at any time. It's funny. I know a lot of drivers that can't rest at home with no sounds. I have heard many drivers say they need the sound of a diesel engine running to sleep. It's actually really weird how this happens.

 

I actually like driving at night. It is more peaceful and I can concentrate easier since I am like a vampire. What type of truck driving jobs should I look for to be able to do this?

 

I did 30 years night shift linehaul. Was taking prescribed sleeping pills to sleep for 29 of them. Would not fall asleep for more than 90 minutes during the day otherwise. Retired now and no more pills to sleep

 

Refrigerated trucking. Lots of night driving and deliveries in the wee hours.

 

But that is offset by the increased amount of drunk/stoned four-wheelers at night, as well as the deer and other wildlife.

 

Talk about wildlife, I’ve bagged quite a few deer and a stray cow driving nights. Along with a long list of assorted small game.

The strangest thing I ever hit was a swarm of honey bees in Texas. Happened a couple weeks ago late afternoon on 1-45 heading down to Houston.

Was probably going 70-75 mph when all of a sudden the view in front of me went black..if only for a fraction of a second. The sound of thousands of bees hitting every inch of exposed truck was deafening. The mess was incredible to say the least.

Didn’t realize what I hit until I got to the shipper. The bees are quite small and it surprised me that they would make such a mess on impact.

 

Most of the driving I ve been doing has been at night, but the governing factor is when the load delivers, then you adjust your sleep prefrence off that to meet the customer needs.

 

I’ve always preferred driving at night. You have your pick of the litter to park anywhere you want and never wait for showers and generally less traffic.
