I have had cataract surgery and just assumed as long as my vision is good I can still get a CDL.

I just read on another thread that a driver was quitting because of cataracts, wonder why he did not have the surgery ?

    Any info ?

not to put a demise on your dilemma. but i know one driver who's last week just passed.

he did the surgery. and apparently it was more then one. but his vision isn't good enough to maintain cdl status anymore.

he says he can still drive intrastate. and if he lasts 3 years with no accidents. then he can go back to interstate.

i don't know all the legalities, and i certainly don't know anything about the condition. i would like to think circumstances can be different for anyone with the problem. so i wish you all the luck.

as long as your vision is good, though. i'd think you would be all set.

personally, i think it's a lousy thing for any driver to have to end their career for any type of condition that may come along in there life time. my bro in law is in that position. for a totally different condition that has nothing to do with eyes. he may be a trucker for the rest of his life. he may have to find a different career. only time will tell.

As long as you can pass the vision test it's OK. I had a section of my retina cut out and replaced due to sun damage and was back at work in a week. Passed several DOT physicals after that.

Do they ask during your DOT physical if you have ever had cataract surgery ? I have had 3 but vision is alright with glasses.

Would not mention it to the doc that I had cataract surgery but I know you have to tell the truth. but just figured maybe a basic eye chart test.

I don't recall that question about cataracts. I googled "long form dot physical" and it looks like you can download a copy.

I've had it done on both my eyes, and had no problem. Don't think it is specifically mentioned on the medical form tho they do have a section for any surgeries that you might have had. My surgery, corrected my vision, son that for the 1st time in my life, I didn't need glasses, other than to.read.

I did not know that one's retina could be replaced. That is great. This could be great news for someone with macular degeneration, a horrible eye disease that causes a slow and devastating blindness.

I have the bad habit of not wearing sunglasses, even in the brightest of sunlight. It is something to seriously think about.

I had my eyes examined back in November 2013, after going 5 years without an eye exam. By the grace of God, my eyes are healthy. I just needed a slight change in my prescription. I also managed to NOT have to have an optical restriction placed on my drivers license. The optometrist was quite decent about that.

I also got an "earful" about waiting too long between eye exams. I will NOT be doing that anymore. It is too risky to not check one's eyes annually.

Dennis, just don't tell them. The place your employer sends you to do the physical will give you an eye test. The more you telll.. the bigger hassle they make it into.

A guy I met told Schneider he had a back problem 10+ years ago but he was fine now. They wouldn't hire him. He never brought it up with Covenant & got the job.

not only can they replace retinas. there is also a camera in the works.

only time i wear sun glasses is riding my motorcycle. used to be a time when there were news stories on tv that talked about damage to the eye. because the tint was dark. your pupils opened wider to allow more light in. wider pupils means more harmful UV rays.

don't know what the story is on sun glasses these days. now that i'm wearing glasses full time. i don't even bother with tint anymore. although, it be nice if i could find flips.
