I am scheduled to start NC Truck Driver School in Smithfield, NC in less than 2 wks. I called Schneider about future hiring possibilities and was told that because I don't live within 100 miles of Charlotte, NC I've got no chance. I live in Kitty Hawk, NC which is within 100 miles of the Norfolk/Va. Beach/Tidewater area of VA. Is it OK to have a NC CDL and get hired in another state? Does anyone have any advice or ideas for me besides MOVE ?! I'm a General Contractor who has no work due to the housing slump and was hoping to try real hard to be a top student/graduate and maybe find a job driving OTR so I can provide for my family. Hoping & Praying on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Can you live in Kitty Hawk, NC and get hired?

Here is what I can tell you. I just moved to Southeastern NC 4 months ago. I work for an Owner Operator and pretty much run my own ship I choose my own loads and have only been able to get home about every 3 or 4 weeks. We are moving back to Indiana because i couls be home every weekend and sometimes a night during the week. Your in a BAD area for most companies as I am also down here. I love it here but it's not worth being away from my wife and kids for that length of time.
You could probably find a job pulling containers without much trouble but I can't say for sure. Good Luck to you. -
There are a billion outfits who hauls ocean containers in the Tidewater area... getting a job should be a breeze for you.

What does not living with-in a hundred miles of Charlotte have to do with anything..
Your CDL will be valid in all 50 states. My Son has his CDL and we are going to Iowa for training and hiring. He doesn't have to change his license; though, I do. When we finish training we will home here in lovely Kittrell, NC
After driving 1000's of miles, what is a couple hundred more to get back an forth to your truck? -
Almost every company i have talked to has pretty much told m,e they will not hire east of I-95 in NC because they have no freight going there and don't won't you to deadhead home. I said the same thing. Ok I'll leave the truck at the terminal and drive the 100 miles home in my personal vehicle but still they say no, that's why I'm going back to IN. I can get home with any company every week there living right on 70 between Indy and Dayton. I know cause I always did in the past.
