I have been pulling my hopper for 10 years last month. I have found that I am at the mercy of the merchandiser or broker concerning freight rates, regardless of the commodity. Within our discussion they offer a rate, I reply that I won't haul it for their offer if I find it to low. They never counter with an increase because, they say,"That's what it pays and we're getting it moved". Never .... Never .... Never have I been able to move them to a higher rate. Is that just the way it is in the hopper industry or am I not skilled in my negotiating? I make cash flow, but very small profits. I'm considering pulling something.

Didn't I just read that capacity is lacking where grain hauling is concerned due to the record harvest and prior grain haulers moving on to greener pastures? The carriers should have carte blanche this year...

    And truckers aren't greedy?

Who wouldn't cash in on an opportunity?

I've done some negotiating with smaller companies and local elevators, the big companies I just say no until they offer something that makes money.

You make a valid point, but hoarding food to hold out for profits when prices are already artificially inflated is flat out greedy. Pure and simple.

There isn't a single farmer hoarding anything to hurt anyone. They are only doing it to make a profit just like any trucker or good business person would do.

Today, the cash price for corn is 20 cents below the cost of production.......so I don't see any artificial inflation of corn prices.

Corn was $7.00 a bushel this time last year. It is right around $4.50 a bushel now, storing it until prices come back up sounds like the smart thing to do.
Have you bought any fertilizer lately, seed, chemicals? Inputs are all up yet prices are down for what they have to sell. I am biased toward the farmer,i don't row crop but along with my dad & son run a couple hundred head of brood cows & do custom hay work along with our trucking.
Next time you sit down to eat give a little thanks to the farmer because without him you wouldn't be able to.
